Okay, this is one of the very few films that I picked up based strictly on the extras.

Originally I was going to pass altogether (saw the film in the theatre and wasn't super impressed), but I do love extras, and the plentiful commentaries and featurettes prompted me to pick this one up.

Looking forward to opening it up!

fumanstan 03-30-04 07:43 PM

The only movie i can think of is Windtalkers. Shrug.

Tarantino 03-30-04 07:49 PM

I picked it up today and I'm LOVING it. Just like the other Fincher releases!

I didn't like the Superbit version. I rented it and the bitrate registered around 5-7 on my DVD player (yes, I have a real-time bitrate display). The video was a bit too dark for the TV I was using at the time.

Now, I have a better TV with component video hookups and I'm liking the 3-disc version a lot better. My only complaint is the packaging which has a similar flimsy cardboard sleeve which is hard to take out. I thought the 3-D menus for the Superbit version was kinda overdone for Superbit. But I really LOVE the menus on the 3-disc! Best menus so far this year.

I've gone through the David Fincher commentary. Very informative.

I've only gone through one pre-production feature so far and it's pretty in-depth. I feel this edition goes hand-in-hand with the Platinum Edition of Se7en because the extras on Se7en goes a lot into what a telecine is and the cinematographer on Panic Room goes more into how to set up the look for a movie. Really great for budding cinematographers.

With what I've seen so far, I'm satisfied with the $34.99 I paid for it. Yes, it's expensive but I think this edition is only for die-hards like me.

This is the reason I love Fincher's DVD's. They're very informative for the budding filmmaker. Are there any other directors/DVD's that have as much/comparable information on them?

I really like Robert Rodriguez DVDs. He's one of those filmmakers who is actively trying to encourage the average Joe to become a filmmaker. On Spy Kids 2, he pretty much forgets about talking about the movie in the commentary and goes off about digital and how to become a filmmaker in the business. In Spy Kids 3-D, he does a little segment after the 10-minute Film School about how to make better home videos. And he also gives a tour of Troublemaker Studios, which is in his home, and you really see how he's almost an indepedent filmmaker--or at least a filmmaker who takes on many roles. If Rodriguez could finance himself, he'd be a mini-Lucas.

Can't wait for the Spy Kids: Special Edition!

The Panic Room SE was announced before the original disc was released. I'd be happy if every movie (good or bad) was given this treatment. I don't see a need to complain about consumers having more options.

Different strokes for different folks. Believe it or not, people have differing tastes in movies. You might not like "Panic Room" all that much, but others do.

Nobody has a gun to your head forcing you to buy the three-disc "Panic Room."

dcprules 03-31-04 01:49 AM

The first disc was a bare bones. Plus, it's David Fincher who makes some of the best discs money can buy. Why wouldn't anybody want it??? Sure, the film wasn't as good as say Se7en, but I was still totally entertained (and, according to the tomatometer, 77% of critics were too). I, for one, can't wait to grab this set.

According to the Criterion Forum they do indeed still hold rights (or should I say according to someone posting there) and they released a LD of it, which included an alternate ending, which I'd love to see! I just hope anyone, Criterion or not, gets to The Game.

But, you haven't watched the Superbit on your new set-up. According to two reviews I have read, the Superbit is slightly darker, but exhibits slightly more detail.

Someone can confirm Spanish Subtitles in ALL Discs(3)?

Its important for me ;-), Thanks

MasterofDVD 03-31-04 12:46 PM

I couldn't find this set at all when I was out yesterday but I was only looking because my Amazon preorder hasn't come yet.

I woke up today to my wife telling me I got a package in the mail but it was only my Adventure "Indiana Jones" Kermit. I would of rather gotten my DVD today.

filmerp 03-31-04 01:34 PM

Holy cow- do the previz commentaries on disc 2 play out the entire movie? I was about 30 minutes in before I needed to do other things.

One thing I didn't like was the safe-cracking featurette. Interesting to see the home video, but couldn't they have edited it down a bit?

ceeece 03-31-04 02:22 PM

I passed on the Superbit edition just for this reason. Then I saw the price tag and thought about it. I had just rejoined Columbia House and thought what the heck. I ordered it as one of my obligation discs and it was the same price as buying it in the store. I can't wait to get it!.... Must not be tempted to watch on HBO or Showtime.

did any one else listen to the commentary of Actors and think Jodie Foster was talking like she directed it, talked to much about the stype of stuff while Forrest barely talked at all??

Not really. I think she's just really sharp. She was very reverential to the work Fincher had done and mentioned a couple of times how much she admired him. She's a director herself, so it was no surprise that she talked in "directorial" terms.

You know, merging the thread this post started into the existing one, makes this statement a threadcrap. Interesting.

I don't think it's possible to threadcrap in your own thread.

I only wish that "every movie" would get a set like this... Sweet Lord, I'd never leave my living room.

I agree with you about the quality of the film itself. I find it to be a mildly-watchable/decent thriller. Sort of a "watch once, move on and forget it"-type of film. But I realize that there are others who loved it.

But I couldn't disagree with you more about this DVD set. The supplements are INCREDIBLE. It's like film school in a box. This isn't 3 discs of fluff. It is detailed_detailed_detailed info about how a movie gets made. I love that -- I don't care if the movie is Citizen Kane or Freddy Gets Fingered. This much detail about the *process* is worth it to me, regardless of the film itself. The extras make the set fascinating.

And, as others have mentioned, if you don't like it... don't buy it. Or if you like the movie and think that a 3-disc set is overkill, buy the inexpensive, movie-only Superbit edition.

I honestly can't understand your complaint here. We have choices between three great options: 1. skip it; 2. get cheap movie only; 3. get amazing 3-disc (still reasonably priced). What's the problem?

catracho 03-31-04 09:47 PM

Any information about spanish subtitles in all discs(3) of this edition.

If someone can check this information, please post here; its important for me.

Thanks ;-)

Of course it is.

Regardless, that's not exactly what I said. Always trying to start trouble, eh, jough? ;)

No, I understood your point - that once the two threads were merged, the OP from thread #2 appeared to be threadcrapping in thread #1. It's a funny twist of fate.

And yes, that's me, always starting trouble. ;)

Rusty James 04-01-04 05:40 AM

The writers' commentary track with Koepp and his guest on this set is easily one of the all-time best audio commentaries I have ever heard.

I agree with the guest when he says that someone should put out a special edition of a notorious flop like Gigli, because it would be fascinating to see how a movie can turn out so, so wrong.

Kant 04-01-04 09:05 AM

I just got this monday and I think the Transfer looks darker, but this is probably how Fincher wanted it. It also looks sharper and the colors are better...just my thoughts.
