As gutwrencher said, "never say never," but I'd be happliy surprised if any of these favorites of mine are released on DVD:
Easy Living (Leisen, 1937) The Young in Heart (Wallace, 1938) Midnight (Leisen, 1939) The Devil and Miss Jones (Wood, 1941) It Started with Eve (Koster, 1941) The Major and the Minor (Wilder, 1942) The Suspect (R. Siodmak, 1944) Dreamboat (Binyon, 1952) Knock on Wood (Panana/Frank, 1954) Texas Across the River (Gordon, 1966) Some Kind of a Nut (Kanin, 1969) Getting Straight (Rush, 1970) Murmur of the Heart (Malle, 1971) The War Between Men and Women (Shavelson, 1972) So Fine (A. Bergman, 1981) |
How about "The Grey Fox," a wonderful film about an ex-con released from prison in the old west.

Ahhh, Fred C. Dobbs... I can't wait for all of the Cagney / Boghart classics to come out.
There are 3 other films that I'm hoping will make it to DVD but may very well possibly never make. They are three pre / post nuclear holocaust movies that came out in the early 80's. They were all made for television (1 on HBO): The Day After Testament By Dawn's Early Light (HBO) I thought all three were VERY good. |

Not movies per say, but a number of VHS music releases that won't make the light of day on DVD.
I've got several videos that I keep because I know there will never be another release of them ever. (Hopefully I'll be able to convert them to DVD at some point). |
You can never say any movie will never be released. In most cases. It's just a matter of time and circumstances.
There were for a long time a number ofsupposedley notorious movies, particularly violent films and horrow movies, and also controversial fare like Texas Chainsaw, Exorcist, Straw Dogs, Clockwork Orange etc that we never thought would get released. Even if an outright ban is placed on a movie, it can always be lifted. As time goes on, the reasons for these bans seem somewhat ludicrous, and the restrictions will eventually be lifted. You often hear film companies coming up with a standard answer when asked about possible release dates for obscure or less popular movies, "There are no plans to release X at this time." Problem is, a lot of people mistakenly interpret that phrase as "Never", and start scouring Ebay for copies, and paying silly prices. But I suppose it all boils down to how much patience you have, as you never know how long it will take to release these things. |
Enter the Ninja
Revenge of the Ninja Ninja III: The Domination Pray for Death Any other Sho Kosugi film! I used to love watching these movies as a kid, along with the American Ninja movies too. Actually, Revenge is out on DVD, in wonderful FULL frame. Oh wait, you wanted GOOD movies? Nevermind... |
I'd love to see a couple brought to DVD:
Grand Prix - greatest racing sequences ever put on film. Moon Shot - excellent documentary by Turner Home Entertainment about the Apollo moon program. There's more but these two are tops on my list. |
Speaking of HBO movies, I remember the early 90s HBO film Stalin, which was pretty good.
I wonder what the chances are of that being released? |
Originally posted by RockyMtnBri There was a George Lucas film that was done in 1983 called Twice Upon A Time that I really liked. It was animated (via cutouts) and it starred Lorenzo Music (the voice of Garfield) as Ralph the All-Purpose Animal. This was available on laserdisc, but I don't seem to be able to find it. My wife tracked down a VHS of me, but I'd kill for a DVD. Great movie. |
Rhinestone- so bad it's funny.
The Whoopie Boys- Underrated Comedy IMO. |

Draven and Lono...
I was getting my hopes up about trying to find it on laserdisc, but from what I read at different sites, it was made PG. That is, they edited the foul language on it. I'll keep holding out for the DVD! |
Howard the Duck
At least not until after Lucas dies… |
Originally posted by justn After Hours Directed by Martin Scorsese. i loved that movie, and hoped it was gonna come out with all the hype about gangs of new york, but nope. would love to have it though http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088680/ And on the subject of other lost classics, I don't think there is much clamoring for the interesting Electra Glide in Blue. And supposedly caught up in legal limbo is the Peckinpah classic Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia. The exact rights issue there escapes me, but hopefully Criterion gets it's mitts on it for a proper release, even if limited. That Straw Dogs disc is a treasure for the extras alone. |
The new Blade Runner DVD...
:-( |
I'd love to see Howard Stern's old channel 9 shows come to DVD. Those were so damn funny, each show out did the last one. I think it's the best thing Stern ever did...that and his book Private Parts. I'm not as big a fan as I used to be and I have the channel 9 shows on VHS, but I'd pay to get them on DVD with some possible extras. :)

You'll never see any of the Miami Vice seasons on dvd. They'll have to pay a fortune to get the rights for all the songs...

BMX Bandits
Monster Squad Twin Peaks: Season 2 Moonwalker Big Top Pee Wee Eddie Murphy: Delirious John Denver and the Muppets: A Christmas Together The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939) The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1939) The Christmas Toy |
There was a Disney (?) movie I remember from my childhood days called Flight Of The Navigator which I doubt will ever be released on DVD (although the VHS sells for $25-$30 on eBay, so I guess it's popular). It was pretty cool at the time (I was like 9, people), and Paul Reubens did the voice of the spaceship. :)

I agree with others in this thread that just about everything will eventually come out on DVD (maybe only in some cheap, full screen, no-frills version). But every year DVDs become cheaper and easier to manufacture, while the demand becomes greater. Just like CDs, you'll see more and more small independent companies pop up to release these obscure titles that have at least some fan base somewhere.
Having said this, I can think of one film I'd love to have that truly may never see the light of day. Does anyone remember a cheesy TV movie called "Cotton Candy"? Goofy, entertaining film about rival high school rock bands. It stars Charles Martin Smith and was directed by Ron Howard. Rumor is Howard hates the film, owns the rights, and plans to NEVER release it. |
Flight of the Navigator is available on Region 2.
Have a look on Amazon.co.uk if you have a multi-region player. |
