Thanks for the link I really enjoyed that article. I'd agree with all the issues especially about sticky tape grrr that stuff is impossible to get off.

I work part time at a retail store and had to encourage 2 theives from stealing some items last night. They left the store with nothing but the jackets on their backs.
If you work at the store, why were you encouraging thieves?

I was encouraging "FROM" stealing, not encouraging them "TO" steal.

"Where are the original Star Wars movies?"

Hello!! Is anybody home?!? This question had better end this year, I know all the signs are positive regarding this release in 2004, but an official press release and content of the boxset or individual releases would be nice...

I think these movies should have pioneered the DVD format!!

Wow, thanks for all the responses to the thread. I hope all the CEO's of the the big studios got a copy of this in the mailbox--especially Warner Bros.--I hate snappers. I also agree with the comment--Not neccessarily Widescreen, but OAR. All of these studios' should show a film the way the director inteded. Thanks all, and keep it going.

I agree that all DVDs should have inserts. This new trend of not providing an insert has to stop. As being a long time collector I feel cheated by not getting an insert with a few movie shots and a nice chapters list.

My grandparents do, too...

To get the thread back on topic to the article, it seems like the two guys writing just spent a day at DVD Talk or HTF and took all of the things people say on these boards and put them in an article.

But it was interesting nonetheless...

Unless you mean DIScouraging them, I'm very confused.

In any case, great list. I agree with all of it. It's nice to some of our pet peeves given some attention in more high-profile media.

I don't understand the need for the sticker on the side (and I really don't get the need for the stickers on the top and bottom of the case). Doesn't the little sticker on the inside of the case set off the store's alarm if the cashier doesn't run it over the machine?

If there was no tape, it would be fairly easy for thieves to just open up the case and quickly remove the security tab.

I don't mind the tape - when I get the DVD home, I just run an X-Acto around all three sides and peel it off.

Same thing I do, it takes all of 15 seconds to open it up.

Granted, message boards are certainly a nightmare for the “grammar police,” but what the hell…

I can understand “encouraging” someone not to steal; or “discouraging” someone from stealing; but “encouraging from stealing”?

From what was the stealing being encouraged?

On-topic comment:
Good List. I only hope some of the studios read it…

The packaging for Fox's Alien Quadrilogy keeps folding out, and folding out, and folding out. It's almost as tall as USA TODAY's Mike Snider.

Too funny and too true. All DVD boxsets from here on out should be more like FUTURAMA Seasons 1 & 2 and FIREFLY.

I'll second that love for the packaging for Fox TV shows like Futurama, Family Guy and King of the Hill.

On the other hand, I hope that they continue the new trend of only allowing people who have actually viewed or at least read about the episodes to write the mini-descriptions for them.

*cough* Family Guy Season 1 & 2 *cough*

Finding Nemo had 2 discs one played Widescreen the other played Fullscreen so it suited everyone! heh

my friend only like fullscreen movies for some reason

i agree that widescreen is best tho looks more "movie-ish"....yea.....

My bad.

Thanks for the correction.

But, I am not "Discouraged" from making further comments in future.

One of the few apparently. The South Park sets at 3 discs are about the max I can stand. Any bigger and I need the coffee table.
I think the SportsNight solution is best: three of those double keep cases that are the width of a single. Looks just as good, and much easier to deal with.

Not me. Dump the fullscreen completely so all the extras are on the second disc and the movie gets an entire disc to itself, with DTS like the rest of the world.

oh, and as for the Alias comment, S1 was released shortly before S3 was aired, which is why S2 was released a few months into the season. Ain't no way in hell S3 will be released 3 months after S2.

Since we already opened up the big ole' can of grammar worms, did anyone catch this line in the article?
DVD is so hot that retailers are using them as loss leaders.
DVD (singular, the form of media) is so hot that retailers are using them (plural, individual pieces of media) as loss leaders.

It really should read: DVDs are so hot that retailers are using them as loss leaders.
