How often do you blind buy television shows?

I mostly blind buy because:

a) The shows looked very interesting to me
b) they had good 'word of mouth'
c) I've had no opportunity to see the show on TV

Current blind buys for me:
Quatermass and the Pit -- REGION 2 (1958)
The Complete Thin Blue Line -- REGION 2 (1995-1996)
Wednesday Play: Cathy Come Home (1965)
The Blue Planet - Seas of Life - Collector's Set (2001)
The War Game -- REGION 2 (1965)
Culloden -- REGION 2 (1964)
Band of Brothers (2001)
The Sandbaggers (1978) <-

With a bigger budget, I'd have more.

Never - Why would you blind buy a TV show when there are so many others to chose from? There has to be something you like that you have already seen.

Aren't that many I've already seen. I hate being on a schedule and having to sit through damned commercials. And of the few that I have watched regularly, I've never bought one on DVD. I've only bought TV shows on DVD that I have never seen or have only seen one or two episodes. I like the thrill of discovery.

i bought the following blind

Alias S1/S2
SATC 1-4
Sopranos S1
OZ S1
24 S2
BandoButters

Quasi-blind
Dark Angel S1
Friends S1-4
24 S1
Simpsons S1-3
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

guess i just buy stuff that i think i'll like, since i watch very little tv. usually, i'll just buy S1, just to make sure i'm not gonna waste a huge amount of money. also, i'll wait for a good deal, so that even if i don't like it, i can ebay it and break even. the same goes for movies...i buy many titles blind.

For the most part, I dont blind buy TV shows. I think the only thing that could count would be Buffy - and that wasnt completly blind. One day some friends of mine loaned me S1, which I watched and enjoyed - and I'd never had seen the show. My housemate went and got S2 right after that at a used store, which I watched and enjoyed. So when S3 came out - I went and bought it on the strength of the first two seasons.

So yeah, it was blind - but it was an informed blind buy.

The Hulk, the Six Million Dollar Man (and Bionic Woman), A-Team and Knight Rider discs were almost blind too. I've seen them all, and loved them all as a kid - but hell if I could remember any of the episodes. So, it was all mostly new to me.

The only thing I could truly say was blind was the 100 TV Shows Megapack, with old Tv shows from the 40's - you bet your life, Gunsmoke, Lone Ranger, Flash Gordon and so on. But it was only 20 bucks - so hardly a big loss if it sucked.

Haven't had any blind buys for TV shows even though I thought about picking up firefly unseen.

I've never done a blind buy for a televison show, mostly because I like to know what I'm getting before I buy it. If I'm interested in the show I'll either borrow a videotape from someone or watch it on tv first.

I consider "blind" any time I get a set, and I haven't seen the season on TV (e.g. I never watched Buffy when it first aired so every season is technically "blind").

Blind buys:
Angel S1&2
Buffy TVS S1-5
Coupling S1&2
The Ben Stiller Show
Ultraviolet
Oz S1&2
Alias S1&2

Non-Bind:
Monty Python's Flying Circus (all)
Absolutely Fabulous S1-4
The Simpsons S1-3
Friends S1-5
X-Files S1-8
Sex and the City S1-5
The Sopranos S1-4
South Park S1&2
Kids in the Hall S1

Wow. I really own a lot of TV on DVD!

Well I started with Alias S1 but guess this will be the only
TV show that I will ever buy. I didn't buy it blind coz I watched
the show and found it interesting .

I only buy shows that I know I will watch:

1. Star Trek OS, NG
2. Twilight Zone
3. Outer Limits
4. I love Lucy
5. The Avengers
6. Batman
7. Xmen
8. Justice League
9. Roots
10. Bunch of Christmas DVD (Frosty, Santa Coming to Town, Charlie Brown, R Rednose Raindeer...)

Why pay that much $$$ without knowing if you will love the show.

Ditto! That's why I didn't pick up any of the Buffy or Angel sets during Costco's pre-Xmas sale.

I haven't "blind bought" any TV show yet. That's what Netflix is for. Of course, I'm about to do a blind buy on I'm Alan Partridge here in a few days...

I can't speak for anyone else, but I mentioned why I do it:
It's pretty much risk-free, because if I buy a show blind and then don't like it, I can sell it on eBay, and usually get back what I paid for it, if not more.
In most cases, I'd actually rather blind-buy a TV show than a movie, because if I don't like it, and wind up selling it, I usually get more of my money back. YMMV

Blind Buys

Upstairs Downstairs series 1-5
Coupling Series 1
24 Season 1 & 2
Awful Truth Complete Series
Futurama Vol.1
Sports Night
Strangers with Candy Season 1

Shogun
Singing Detective
Dekalog

There are a few I bought and got rid of because I hated them, Buffy Season 1 and Mr. Show season 1 are the only two I can recall right now.

I bought Buffy Season 1 because it was on sale the week it came out, and I had a GC to Best Buy. Seriously the best blind buy ever.

Only one for me: Babylon 5, based on your recommendation and those of others here at DVD Talk. Well worth it.

I only have two other TV series that I am collecting (neither a blind buy), so I am not a big buyer of TV sets. And, since I only get two channels of TV, DVDs are the only way for me to see most TV series. I may get some more in the future. They would necessarily be blind buys.
