We need to know this, why? How does this revelation relate to Criterion DVD's? Are you planning to eBay it?

It's funny when you stumble into the middle of a thread and this is quoted on the top of the page!

As for me, I remember having a hard time understanding the allure of CC in the beginning. At times, I still do. As many times as this question is asked, it still fosters some mostly intelligent discussion.

I agree with you victant. I couldn't understand the allure of CC dvds, until I needed to watch Seventh Seal, Seven Samurai, etc...

I'd recommend Straw Dogs first as it is going out of print. Great flick.

Then I'd move onto Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas - one of my personal favorites.

From there - Chasing Amy - Criterion Collection - this is extermely cheap online - less than $10 in most cases adn it will get you introduced to the Criterion Collection - although this DVD is only a 1 disc.

I believe you can go here for a list to browse:

Good luck Newbie2003!!

So, the idea is to start with some of the best in the collection? Seven Samurai, Ikiru, ..... and that's about it, though I have others.... these are the must-sees....

These are my favorite Criterions:

SHICHININ NO SAMURAI (1954) [Seven Samurai] by Akira Kurosawa, Japan
DET SJUNDE INSEGLET (1957) [Seventh Seal] by Ingmar Bergman, Sweden
LES ENFANTS DU PARADIS (1945) [Children of Paradise] by Marcel Carné, France
HUA YANG NIAN HUA (2000) [In the Mood for Love] by Kar-wai Wong, Hong Kong
LES DIABOLIQUES (1955) by Henri-Georges Clouzot, France
UMBERTO D. (1952) by Vittorio De Sica, Italy

I think these are worth the money, but there are of course other films that are great as well that are not released by Criterion.

Dvd Smurf,

thanks for giving us the translation for Seventh Seal (along with the Swedish title).

While I have a handful of Criterion titles, I'm not a spine number collector by any means. However, with so many DVDs coming out these days, if I see a review of a title and it's by Criterion, I'm more likely to give it a read. I may come away muttering about gay cowboys and pudding, or I might put it on my DVDAF wishlist.
The numbering is a gimmick, but their choices are mostly on the mark. [Newt] Mostly. [/Newt]

What's so funny? Did I give it an ambiguous phrasing?

Ok, I don't understand what "gay cowboys and pudding" has anything to do with Criterion collection dvds.

Criterions have some really nice classic movies I like. I don't buy Criterions just to collect them. I'm selective of which Criterion titles I buy. I only get the ones I enjoy watching over many times.
