I took the DVDs that i was having problems with to my friends house, and watched them. there were absolutly no problems at all. I guess my players age is catching up!

It may be a player-specific issue, but that doesn't change the fact that it is in fact a huge, widespread problem. I'm really hoping that Fox will handle this directly, so I won't have to return the entire thing to DDD and risk having another defective set. And like someone else mentioned, I will have to re-watch everything to make sure something ELSE isn't messed up.

Yeah, I was watching this in DTS the other day and it did that where they are exploring the outside of that alien planet. Is that where it did it on yours?

*Crosses fingers* I knew I wasn't a fool to spend nearly two weeks pay for that damn DVD player!!

Guess I'll find out later tonight...

I've only watched Alien(the theatrical cut) and the first 35 minutes of Aliens(also the theatrical cut) and I had one instance of skipping. When Dallas visits "mother" for the second time(around the 70:10 mark), it jumps ahead about 15 seconds. Fortunately it doesn't always do this when I play it, but it's still annoying.

My player is a Sony S330, I think. (I'm not at home now, so I can't check, but I bought it in the summer of '99, so it's an old one.) I've watched everything on all nine discs, except the theatrical version of Resurrection and the Special Edition of Alien 3. So far, the only problem I've had is on the theatrical edition of Alien 3, where it froze/skipped during chapter 21. If that turns out to be the only disc I have a problem on, I plan to see if Borders will let me just exchange that disc (disc 5) for one in another box. Then the other box can be returned by Borders as defective, and I don't have to watch everything all over again in a new box, hoping and praying that something that was fine in the old box isn't messed up in a new box. I already know that all my discs are fine, except disc 5, so I want to just exchange that disc. But, a friend who works in a retail store that sells cds and dvds (not Borders) told me that in general in all stores it's against policy to do what I'd like to do. That you can't just exchange part of a product; it's all or nothing. He suggested I might be lucky enough to find a store or store employee who'd be willing to do that, but not to count on it. I'll give it a try. But, maybe before that, I'll look into a lense cleaner--thanks for the heads-up on that. Oh, I've also emailed Fox about this problem, and asked about exchanging just the defective disc, but haven't gotten a reply. Somewhere today--I can't remember where--I read that someone else called Fox and was told they don't ever exchange anything.

Here's an update, for those who are interested. Borders did let me exchange just the one defective disc in my set, and the replacement is fine. Don't know if all Borders will do this, or if other stores will, but it's worth a try.

Aliens directors cut skips on my Samsung. Blast it!

Wannabe 01-05-04 11:38 PM

Aliens director's cut skipped a scene w/ Sigourney and Paul Reiser on my new Philips 726. Argh!

Is it the "seamless" branching?

I have returned two boxed sets of the quadrilogy to Amazon. Both boxes had at least one disk so badly scratched it froze up. I also found one or two disks that froze without any apparent marks on them. After two sets, I just got a refund from Amazon. I am waiting at the moment...trying to decide whether to try the box set again, or go with the individual CE's. :(

jayson1017 01-11-04 08:29 PM

That must really suck. Do you have to pay for the shipping either way?

nemein 01-11-04 08:45 PM

I was running into the same problem so I ordered a replacement from Amazon (w/o shipping the current one back) between the two sets I was able to come up w/ a good one and ship a bad one back ;) I agree though the fact we have to go through this in the first place is a PITA :(

Smart move on your part....I thought of that <I>after</I> I got the defective 2nd set. -ohbfrank-

Amazon reimbursed all shipping costs, so I am out no money...except for the fact I sold my Legacy Set. :( I'm skiddish about what to buy next....going to give it a little time to decide and watch prices.

I've been in correspondence with Fox over sratched disk problems I've had with two Quadrilogy sets. This email is in response to my inquiry as to whether they will be taking measures to correct the problem in future sets:

<i>"The problem is the way the DVD set is handled when being shipped or stocked. If the set is knocked or dropped or even thrown, the DVDs inside and knocked free from the teeth and then are scratched by the teeth. Fox is in the process of eliminating the Digi packs that the Alien DVD set was sold in. At this time, I do not believe that Fox will change the case of the Alien set."

By the way, neither set I purchased had any loose disks...they had to have been scratched at their assembly.

Regardless, I guess I will wait a few months and see what changes they end up making to this set. I've emailed her back and asked what the new packaging will consist of....hoping it is similar to the current individual DVDs. Will update this post with her response if she comes back with one.

The Alien Theatrical Cut with DTS played with no problems on my Panasonic RP-82.

The SE of Aliens also played flawlessly. I have yet to check Alien 3 and Resurrection, but at the price I paid, those two were basically free.

No problems on any disc in my circa-2000 Toshiba SD-2200. I love this player....

too bad it's not progressive scan :(

Yeah, right. It got to be a miracle to get fingerprints on those discs when being shipped or stocked. The real problem is they paid some minimum-wage workers to assembly the sets without teaching them the proper way to handle the discs.

Not gonna happen for a long time. They just released and will be releasing a series of premium 2-disc sets with spine numbers on them. If they are releasing some in digipaks and others in keepcases later, it will piss people off.

Calistoga 01-14-04 12:56 PM

I just got a reply to another email to Fox asking for more details on the new packaging. Here's her reply:

"The new multi-DVD sets are going to be released in the individual, slimmer DVD cases."
