Haven't had skipping yet...

Again to Sony DVD player owners:

Anyone have the Alien 3 SE subtitle problem? Turn subtitles OFF, as a result "Special Edition" appears onscreen during every SE scene.

Happens with my Daewoo 5700 too. I turned the subtitle option off and got the "Special Edition" markers instead throughout the movie.

I have requested a replacement Quad set from Amazon because I received ALien: Directors Cut had three deep scratches on it which made the disc unplayable. Aliens won't play at all and there are three skips during the middle portion of Alien 3.

I haven't had any problems at all so far, but I'll let you know if anything happens.

0 problems with the movies themselves yet... only watched Disc 2 for extras. So far so good!

Positive Update!

Okay, it wasn't the dang dvds or the Cyberhome after all. I suddenly remembered the advent of the lens cleaner, and searched for it. Finally, I was able to use it and, voilą, everything works smooth now. Except Fargo SE's ch. 25-26 on the widescreen side. But that's getting exchanged tomorrow, so......

Anyway, thanks everyone!! Remember, always keep the lens cleaner handy!

The only thing wrong with my Quadrilogy is that I need a 5 foot long table to open the whole thing up :)

Bluebomber 12-25-03 11:26 PM

Well I noticed about 5-15 random seconds of pixelation throughout Alien DC , but it never stopped playing. Using a Panasonic Rp56 , going to track down a lense cleaner and see if that helps.

i think i've watched all of the extended cuts, and the only problem was a slight hiccup (not a layer change) on the alien SE.

Good to hear.

I guess I do not need to watch Aliens then although I might force myself to watch Aliens with my cyberhome anyway :)

Well, Alien skips in a couple spots on my Sony player. I tried it on my Pioneer DVD Rom and it was fine. I haven't checked to see if there are any other problems.

So the big question is, what should I do about it? It's obvious this is a widespread problem. Will the studio do something? Or should I just return it to DDD and hope I get a good copy?

keyed 12-26-03 03:07 AM

I've watched the extended version of both Alien 3 & Resurrection so far, and both skipped. Resurrection skipped on a scene change, so it might have been a layer change problem. I don't recall when it happened in Alien 3, just that it did.

Oh, and the dvd player was a Philips model.

Tarnower 12-26-03 06:46 AM

I have avoided buying this, since I really dislike Alien 3 and Resurrection. So I'm waiting the buy Alien and Aliens in January. They will be stand-alone titles, although 2-disc sets. I am wondering if the discs will be the same discs that are in the current Quadrilogy, just packaged in different casings? I have a feeling they are. Actually, it wouldn't make sense that new transfers be done so close to the release of the Quadrilogy. I guess I just answered my own question. Still, if one has to return the movies, at least it's just the individual title as opposed to a 9-disc box set. Then you to re-watch the whole friggin' thing to make sure there aren't other areas that are misbehaving. It sounds like the studio is going to have some mega-returns from retailers (online and brick-and-mortar). I wonder how long it will be before we get some statement on this situation from the studio?

TomOpus 12-26-03 09:16 AM

1) It's been discussed in another thread that the individual releases will be the same discs as in the Quadrilogy

2) Don't you usually only have to return the affected discs? Only seems like a few are having problems with a couple of the discs. If Fox does a "recall" then I'm sure they'll handle it like other studios and you only send in the problematic discs.

folgersnyourcup 12-26-03 11:41 AM

I've got a question regarding the packaging of the set. I understand that sometime next month these 4 films will be released separately. I purchased the quadrilogy but don't like the packaging, the plastic housing for disc 2 and disc 7 has come completely off of the glue holding it there and the case is hard to open because it sticks to it when I try to unfold it. I am wondering if it will be a possibility to try and pay Fox to get the individual cases that these films will be released in....

UncleCaveman 12-26-03 11:51 AM

I took the DVDs that i was having problems with to my friends house, and watched them. there were absolutly no problems at all. I guess my players age is catching up!

It may be a player-specific issue, but that doesn't change the fact that it is in fact a huge, widespread problem. I'm really hoping that Fox will handle this directly, so I won't have to return the entire thing to DDD and risk having another defective set. And like someone else mentioned, I will have to re-watch everything to make sure something ELSE isn't messed up.

Yeah, I was watching this in DTS the other day and it did that where they are exploring the outside of that alien planet. Is that where it did it on yours?

Guess I'll find out later tonight...

I've only watched Alien(the theatrical cut) and the first 35 minutes of Aliens(also the theatrical cut) and I had one instance of skipping. When Dallas visits "mother" for the second time(around the 70:10 mark), it jumps ahead about 15 seconds. Fortunately it doesn't always do this when I play it, but it's still annoying.

mike harnish 12-29-03 11:12 AM

My player is a Sony S330, I think. (I'm not at home now, so I can't check, but I bought it in the summer of '99, so it's an old one.) I've watched everything on all nine discs, except the theatrical version of Resurrection and the Special Edition of Alien 3. So far, the only problem I've had is on the theatrical edition of Alien 3, where it froze/skipped during chapter 21. If that turns out to be the only disc I have a problem on, I plan to see if Borders will let me just exchange that disc (disc 5) for one in another box. Then the other box can be returned by Borders as defective, and I don't have to watch everything all over again in a new box, hoping and praying that something that was fine in the old box isn't messed up in a new box. I already know that all my discs are fine, except disc 5, so I want to just exchange that disc. But, a friend who works in a retail store that sells cds and dvds (not Borders) told me that in general in all stores it's against policy to do what I'd like to do. That you can't just exchange part of a product; it's all or nothing. He suggested I might be lucky enough to find a store or store employee who'd be willing to do that, but not to count on it. I'll give it a try. But, maybe before that, I'll look into a lense cleaner--thanks for the heads-up on that. Oh, I've also emailed Fox about this problem, and asked about exchanging just the defective disc, but haven't gotten a reply. Somewhere today--I can't remember where--I read that someone else called Fox and was told they don't ever exchange anything.

mike harnish 01-05-04 10:49 AM

Here's an update, for those who are interested. Borders did let me exchange just the one defective disc in my set, and the replacement is fine. Don't know if all Borders will do this, or if other stores will, but it's worth a try.

Aliens directors cut skips on my Samsung. Blast it!
