The anime guys have been noticing whacko pricing since at BBY since at least this last Summer -- generally much higher than before (like 20-30% increase) but sometimes all over the map, vol x of some series will be full MSRP but vol x+1 and vol x+2 will be MSRP-20% and MSRP-10%.
But, I have a theory about the craziness right before xmas. It has been a while, but when making a return at BBY without a receipt I seem to recall them only giving you the lowest price over the last 90 days. So, a bunch of gifts get bought in the last 30 days at inflated prices, when the inevitable returns come in they only give people the substantially lower prices from before the mass increase. Thus BBY makes a profit, gets to keep the merchandise anyway and usually nobody notices since the returner isn't the purchaser (else they would have had the receipt).

There are actually several Wherehouse stores still open in Southern California. Obviously it all depends on where you live. I have one pretty close to me in San Juan Capistrano that I go to before even thinking of going to Best Buy...
I agree that Christmas is a factor as well...
I buy 90% of my DVD's online anyways, I'll never believe that there's a better way to buy DVD's at a good price if you have a little patience...

I guess they figure that they aren't going to lose enough customers to make a dent, so they'll gouge those who are in there at the time. I noticed today that they had marked up some ink cartridges, as if they weren't expensive enough, by a couple of dollars each. It's ballsy and brazen considering the glut of competition surrounding most stores, but I'm guessing it works on those folks who just don't know any better or who feel locked in because of the crowds and traffic.
Damn Scrooges.

I gave up on BB when they jacked up their anime prices from $24 to $29. Hell, if I wanted to pay $30 for a disk I'd go back to Suncoast.
As far as new releases go, we have a Fred Meyers store near where I work that's just as cheap.

I haven't been to Best Buy in over a month.
Their release day prices have been crappy for months now. The only DVD's I bought there on release day in the last two months was T3 and Pumping Iron, which they had a deal on.
Other than that, they've been pretty bad with the prices. But I don't hold it against them. When they have deals again, I'll be back. Of course since I have 3 Targets, 2 Circuit Citys, Wal-Mart, Borders, and Fry's all closer to my house than BB, they better have a real good deal.

$120+ for DVD tv sets that run $50-$60 everywhere else. I would have never thought they would have lasted this long. Good riddance.

The only good thing Sun Coast is good for are movie posters
Nice prices,a decent selection...but only if you don't own any of the posters yet like myself. Since they all carry the exact same selection of posters. So once I buy the about 10 I am interested in there sometime. They won't have any posters left worth buying. I will just have to search ebay & poster shops for cool rare & 'older' posters that I would love to purchase since they have excellent artwork.

i was shocked to find OUATITW at Border for full retail.
if i hadn't already had credit there i would have gone elsewhere.

I know for a fact EB games raised prices on all their used games before the Holiday rush. My friend works there and he spent the week before Thanksgiving raising the prices of over 200 items in the store.

Oh, so you've been to the Borders here. They have always been at full MSRP excepting their sales items for the current week. Some MSRPs have come down, true, but Borders is still charging MSRP.
B&N seems to be at or above MSRP.
