Novice user - need some help please

Hi,
I am trying to purchase a cheap DVD player in the US for my parents back in India. I heard from a friend that it will not work since the DVDs in India will be encoded as Region 5 and the DVD player that I am planning to purchase is probably encoded only for Region 1.

Can anyone tell me the following:
1. Is the above true? That DVDs in India will not play on a DVD player I buy here in the US

2. I am planning to buy an Aspire AD-1100 and dont know if the above applies to it. Does anyone know?

3. Can anyone point me to an alternative that I can give as a gift to my parents back in India in case the Aspire player does not have the Region 5 option.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Harshad

Harshad,

I'm not familiar with the Aspire model you're looking at - but basically you need buy a player that can be made region-free and so can play discs from any region.

The other problem you have is that players in the US are NTSC - while I believe TV sets in India are PAL format.

I would suggest you go the 'International DVD' section of this forum where you should be able to find some recommendations.

Good Luck.

A Malata DVP-520 will get around all the NTSC/PAL and region problems. The power/electrical requirement is a very good point to consider though.
