Stop the Floaters!

I've found that before shipping a DVD, putting a paper towel folded up in quaters in a snapper case will stop the floater.

I've received way too many shipments lately with at least 1 floater (box sets can have more). Why can't the manufacturers put a small piece of paper, plastic or foam over the DVD on the spindle to prevent this from happening? It seems like an easy solution.

Some are. I know I recently opened one that had a square piece of foam and another that had a square with an ad, but I can't remember who put them out.

Silly me. I thought fiber induces floating at least according Newton's Third Law.

this is the main reason i prefer to shop at B&M stores as opposed to mail order, i can at least do the shake test. i wish they would do SOMETHING.

because online stores do such a big volume of DVD sales, they may be able to put some pressure on the companies to find a remedy to "floaters". i know ALOT of people that send back DVDs just because theyre floaters and scratched, even if they play well. someone should try to make a stand. if they ever remedy this, ALL my DVD shopping will be online.

At first I thought this was a post about floaties!

A funny story about floaties...oh wait, I won't go there.

Seriously though, if they would just stop using snappers in the first place, we wouldn't have these problems. I've have a few snappers arrive with broken hubs which had to be replaced. Luckily the disc wasn't damaged due to floating.

On the flip side, there are a lot of Amray case designs that are very difficult to get the disc off the hub. I suppose they protect the disc better during shipment, but what about when I want to watch the movie? Sometimes I have to press so hard, I feel like I'm going to break the case! Those are really annoying.

Its when the disc is popped out of its place when you open the DVD case and sometimes the disc is scratched.

This is why I like the thin packs Fox uses in their box sets and Paramount's packaging for Deep Space Nine and CSI-the way the cases are set up, floaters are impossible.

What sets? Is this new? The Buffy and Angel sets are anything but thin and they are infamous for floaters.

Basically all their new TV shows on DVD, such as Firefly, King of the Hill, Family Guy, etc. Sadly, the older shows that were released in those horrible fold out cases are still getting the fold out treatment. I would be more than happy if they put out the remaining sets of Buffy and Angel and X Files in the thin packs. Wouldn't bother me one bit.

I'm more familiar with the term 'rattlers' as opposed to 'floaters'..i suppose living in the UK reduces the likelihood of confusion of whether i'm actually referring to rather unfriendly reptiles.

I usually flush twice to get rid of floaters.

i hate floaters when they arrive in the mail, cuz that means taking a trip to the local B&M for an exchange. whenever i send out a used dvd, i take a piece of bubblewrap to keep the disc in place in case some hub action occurs.

It's clear the current design of DVD cases are inadequate if they can't keep them from becoming damaged in transit.

I would say it wasn't a problem if it didn't happen that often, but with me it seems that it happens 30% of the time. 3 in 10 arrive as a floater. That's way too much.

Quickly becoming the main reason I shop at Best Buy instead of deepdisountdvd. Returned my second scratched copy of Tenacious D Masterworks last week...
