my first impression from the post was that, "on the bonus side" was a figure of speech and not actually meaning the other side of the dvd. i don't know for sure, but i would figure if it needed it it would be 2 disc (or atlest all on one side). unless they offer a fullscreen version on the flip side and split up the extras.

I don't know if you're kidding around or not, but any lip sync problems you've noticed are part of the film. By their nature, these are dubbed films. Leone shot this film (and others) without any live sound. The actors on the set often spoke a mix of English, Spanish, and Italian; whatever their native language was. All of the dialogue would later be re-dubbed in every language necessary for worldwide distribution (Eastwood, Wallach, and Van Cleef obviously did their own English dubbing).

This is actually very prevalent in lots of Italian (and some other nations') cinema, not just Leone's films. Fellini often did this, and it is a staple of Spaghetti Westerns and Giallo pictures.

The original mono track better be included or I am not buying it most likely & sticking with the current dvd.

While some may find the new BANG BANG cannon ball sound effect to the gunfire in the new remix cool or 'better'
. I really miss the original gunfire effect in the mono track. The one we all know & love..& what set the film apart from all the rest. It just had an awsome sound to it,that is replaced with more oompth in the 5.1 remix.

I don't know the full details of the DVD that's coming out, but I'm assuming that they'll be using the newly restored transfer that aired on AMC last year as part of their film preservation festival. I've actually been really surprised that it hasn't surfaced even sooner since it aired so long ago and was such an obvious candidate for a reissue since they already poured so much money into the restorations.

If I'm right and they are transferring from this version then Leone/Eastwood/Good, Bad and the Ugly fans will definitely be psyched even if it is light on documentary's and other stuff.

The film was extensively restored and features footage never included in any other English language version (even the original US theatrical release). It had only ever been part of Italian prints and they had to go back to Clint Eastwood and Eli Wallach to do voicework.

I'm glad to hear a restored version of GBU is coming. The current one IS anamorphic. I personally wish they would not add back into this film. I don't think a revisionist cut of GBU is desirable.

Giu La Testa in a long euro cut would be much appreciated though. Hopefully that'll come soon, as I've heard there is a restored longcut making the rounds as we speak. Hopefully they'd have the decency to NOT call it Fistful of Dynamite or Duck You Sucker.

The current GBU was one of the first DVDs that I ever owned... along with For a Few Dollars More, Wild Bunch and Seven Samurai (1st Pressing.)

Well that is a relief to myself that the current dvd is 16.9. I was worried for a moment(if the mono is left off the rerelease). Since I have a nice new laptop with an awsome widescreen screen & have finally noticed why 16.9 is important

+ unlike WS sets, there is no zoom in function on the pc. So something like The Doors SE is a small small heavily windowboxed in image & an eyesore.

Since my brother has taken over the entertainment room. The laptop will be my only way to view dvds at the moment. Not that I am complaining since the sound quality is amazing & lifelike(it decodes DD signal unlike our current dvd player) & the image amazing & looks great with grain as well,so you won't hear many complaints from me on that

Now if only the first two films were released in 16.9!

The restoration was headed up by their broadcast/repetory theatrical division. Prints have been playing the repetory circuit for many months now, so MGM probably wanted to finish the theatrical rounds before going ahead with the DVD. A similar thing will probably happen with Duck, You Sucker, which is now making the theatrical rounds. I've been lucky enough to catch both restored prints during their premiere runs at the Film Forum here in NYC.

Well, it's not like Star Wars.... the restored version is supposedly the original cut. The version we're most used to is the general "international" version.

I just finished watching this film tonight for the first time. I enjoyed and I'm glad to hear a new edition is comming out. Its a shame MGM isn't going to take advantage of seamless branching so we can choose our desired version. I'll still be picking this up. I hope the rest of the trilogy get's this treatment too.
