Next year I believe will be the BIGGEST YEAR FOR DVD like its peak year look at the titles already announced or heavily rumoured:

Indeed next year there are some titles that I've been waiting for for what seems like 10 years...Star Wars...Schindlers...

Duel Im sure will be cancelled again...luckily...I got the last release...WOOT!

King Kong is one of the major releases next year for me...

for me, theres quite a bit more than that, and just from the first quarter:

-Rules of the Game, Ikiru, Diary of a Country Priest, Pickup on South Street ,Le Corbeau, all by Criterion

-The rest of the lone wolf and cub movies Animeigo is releasing

-the zatoichi movies H/V and animeigo are releasing

-Lady Snowblood 1,2 by Animeigo

-Underworld Beauty, Blackmail is my Life, Kanto Wanderer, Tattooed Life by Home Vision

-Deathdream, Fight For Your Life, and others from Blue Underground

-Superfly, Gaslight, Blow-Up, Death In Venice, The Damned, Postman Always Rings Twice(original), Wind and the Lion by Warner

-A Special Edition of Dawn of the Dead if that comes out.

-They Call Her One Eye, and any other synapse releases that are cool

-Flesh and Blood, Serpent's Egg, Persona, Shame, Hour of the Wolf, Passion of Anna by MGM.

Wow, I find it hard to top 2003 - With Indy, Aliens, Vacation, and a ton of other titles that almost left me broke.

I expect excessive amounts of double dip releases this year. I'm hoping that the smaller weird genre releases will keep me in new viewing for this year.

Of the many, MANY titles mentioned in this thread, the only one I'm the least bit interested in is Ed Wood. :eek: And maybe Aladdin. Oh, and I'll be picking up The Grapes of Wrath too, but only because it's part of the Fox Studio Classics series.

There actually aren't a whole lot of films I'm still waiting for on DVD, and of the ones I'm awaiting the most, none have been announced yet, or even hinted at. :(

I'm looking forward to TV shows on DVD in '04 more than anything else.

I have to disagree with this, for one reason: This year DVD players finally cracked the $25 price margin for a Progressive Scan/S-Video player.

And I'm living proof, having just bought mine on a BF sale for 24.99 AR.

With (any) new technology you need a certain threshold in your market to make it feasible to market the product. The distribution of our old, beloved classics, in particular, presents an additional challenge because it is extremely expensive in human labor and skill to remaster these films and press them into a 21st Century DVD form.
The paradigm is further complicated because consumers aren't going to purchase DVDs unless they first have a DVD player http://www.intergate.com/~tobeornot2...AMA/yGADUH.gif and the Studios' greatest boon this past Black Friday was to witness millions of Americans, like myself, purchase the mechanism by which to take advantage of their product — a DVD player.

ETILIM19 is correct, but not necessarily for the reasons he stated. http://www.intergate.com/~tobeornot2.../gWINKGRIN.gif In exploding this market by a factor of millions of DVD-player-owners, as was finally done this past month, the Studios are now going to be able to leverage the huge expense of remastering our classics against a market that will reward them with volume on a scale unprecedented (imho).

And 2004 is when I predict we'll witness the shift from VHS to DVD as it thunders across American households newly outfitted with their first DVD player.

Oh, and one thing that I'm not looking forward to, but which I'm afraid will be happening anyway, is the release of even more DVDs in fullscreen only. :( MGM and Columbia Tri-Star have already announced several catalog titles in fullscreen for next year, and I have a sinking feeling those are just the tip of the iceberg. :down:

Disney has taken it off as a premiere show on Disney Channel, moved it to 1:30 AM and 2:30 in the afternoon, as compared to 3:30, 4:30, 10 to 11, and 1:00 daily

A petition was started, then removed, but Buena Vista employees did listen.

Lizzie McGuire stopped showing as much, and weeks later the first two Lizzie DVD's came out..

However, they could have just released season 1 on one DVD..and not two with no real order....

IMO, Jan/Feb 2004 is better.

I'm not much of a mainstream fan - so those titles wouldn't really get me excited. 3 of the Criterions you listed (not a fan of Naked Lunch) are very impressive though.

I agree - Jan/Feb are going to kill me wallet, especially after all of the cash outlay for Nov/Dec releases and bargains. What I'll be going after:

Also, it's going to be a good year for TV boxsets: besides the aformentioned Barney Miller, also looking forward to Kung Fu, Star Trek TOS, Seinfeld, SCTV, Kids in the Hall, and probably Taxi and Northern Exposure (as rumor has it). Plus all of the next seasons for the series I'm already collecting: All in the Family, X-Files, The King of Queens, The Simpsons.

Hopefully, this will be the year I make the 90% mark of my wish list...

I think DVD2003 is the best year so far. There are few really great releases coming in DVD2004, but I would not say it is going to be the best year ever.

Schindler's List, LOTR:ROTK EE and Star Wars box set (maybe My Darling Clementine) are the only earth moving releases I know of or really care about.

I think most of the movies most of us wanted on DVD, except Star Wars, are already out.

What we really need are more TV releases!!

->We need uncensored toons and wartime tunes please

->Give me 'HAPPY DAYS' season releases!!

->Warner MUST release Batman animation seasons, although I think they are holding out on this to promote the 5th Batman film.

->FUTURAMA Vol 3 is coming in March!

->I would expect the 3rd seasons of 'ALIAS' and '24' on DVD sometime around September.

Given that Pirates of the Caribbean came out widescreen-only, maybe 2004 could be the year of OAR . . .

Still, given Columbia Tri-Stars determination to release half their catalog titles Pan and Scan and Universal's love for two releases . . . I doubt it.

I concur. :p I would wait for the end of the year before comparing.

It's also about which films come out next year in theaters and makes it to dvd before the year end. then the following year and so forth. it's a cycle that will never end that the next year will have just as many big names as the one previous.

to me, these are BIG releases.

Star Wars is old hat. Lord of the Ring can get bent. There are only two*TRUE* releases of 2004 worthy of getting worked up over:

Gilligans Island S1 and The A-Team S1

Anything else is just a pretender wanna-be DVD.

Nay, I say! I've already got both versions of Star Wars on LD so any future releases, although nice to have, are not a vital part of my video collection. And frankly I'd take the worst episode of the A-Team - even one of the really crappy season 5 episodes where the A-Team was working for Robert Vaughn - over 500 Lord of the Rings any day of the week.

So yeah - I'm deadly serious.

The MTV animated 1st Season of Spiderman is also out next month. :)
