I decided to make a thread where we kind of critic dvd cover art. You post a pic of a dvd then go over what you like,hate,etc. Wheather or not if you have seen it try and answer them with these questions?

1) Does it look interesting?
2) Would you buy it just by the looks?
3) What don't you like about it?

Remember it doesn't matter wheather or not you have seen it. Pretend you haven't see every pic posted and give your thoughts on it. I'll start it off with this one:

Excellent idea. I'm a communications design student in college and this is pretty much how I spend my thursdays and fridays - in critiques discussing each other's design decisions.

I really wish I actually watched Roswell since the first design decision I would question would be "does it convey the spirit of the movie/tv series". And sadly without this knowledge I really cannot comment on that first, essential question.

I read quick plot synopsis but that doesn't tell you anything about the flavor of the show itself.

Ok...

1) No, it's not that interesting to me, like most dvd covers it features big heads of the stars. Blah. The strage stare in their eyes are really the only thing tipping you off that something is different about them. The 3 people in the background back lit also seem somehow different but not nearly enough.

If I was designing these I would most likely try and find a way to subtley imply that these normal looking teens have alien powers (whatever those may be, like I said I don't watch this show).

2) No, I would not buy it strictly off the cover but I don't own any tv shows on dvd so maybe i'm not the best person to ask about this.

3) What don't I like? The big heads as I said before, the kids in the background are so far back to the point of being unecessary in the design, complete with photoshop lens flare.

I know all about the show and its history so it’s difficult being subjective, especially as I have already commented on the design. Anyway here goes.

As someone who works with design (but not as a designer) there is something about the cover that just does not seem quite right. I cannot pin it down but the general feel I get is that’s its not very professional compared with most DVD cover designs. The techniques used to create it are fairly run of the mill PhotoShop skills and the lens flare is a bit passé now a days. The overall design comes across as being disjointed, with each element being individual rather than merging in to an integrated cover design. If this was produced by a design company I would have expected more skill and design flair.

What does the cover convey? Well seeing it for the first time not a lot. I really would not see any sort of Alien connection from the graphics and my first impression was that there was maybe more of a horror film style to it.

If I did not know anything about Roswell then it would not attract me to take a second look.

I'm looking for more imaginative front covers. I'm so sick of seeing noggin shots. Whenever I see one that doesn't have a bunch of heads it grabs my attention quickly!
