I believe what happened is that it was pulled at the last minute, meaning a few copies got out to stores and people bought them.

The same thing happened with Ed Wood R1.

The same thing happened with 300 spartans. They go for around $60 each. I was really looking forward to both of these.

I have heard a rumor (could be total BS) that Duel was delayed because that old man that ran over all those people accidentally (or not who knows) killed a relative of someone closely involved in making "Duel". I guess that could make sense, with the nature of the movie and all....

I believe it was Dennis Weaver's daughter-in-law that was killed. I'm not sure if that's the real reason for the delay, however.

Don't know if it's true, but this site shows a May 21, 2004 release. Quite suspicious being that it's on a Friday.

I thought I had read that at the last minute Spielberg made them pull it due to an unsatisfactory transfer. That he wants to digitally remaster it for better quality.......

Nope. Nothing had been confirmed from Universal as to why it was pulled.
All of us can only guess.

Others who have the DVD said there errors in the movie such as scenes where Speilberg's head shows in the rear view mirror and parts of him on the very edge of the film where he's in the back seat of the car.

I'll wait till May for the perfect copy. If it was pulled, there was a reason for it. I certainly don't want an inferior copy.

The disc should have never been delayed. It's worth searching for.

One of the rumors as to the pulling was due to the fact that the version on the latest disc was the Widescreen "European cut" of the movie; but it's presented in the 1.33:1 ABC-TV aspect ratio.

Considering the fact that the year before a "Widescreen" version of the movie was pulled at the last second, perhaps Spielberg actually wanted both versions to be included: The European Cut in 1.78:1 anamorphic Widescreen, and the ABC-TV Cut in 1.33:1.

But who really knows??

(Anywhoo, thanks to Amazon, I got mine!)

Spielberg mentions those errors in the documentary *on the DVD itself* and they show footage of them. They were well aware of these problems (which have always been in the film) and this obviously can't be the reason for the recall.

I don't know the reasons the disc was recalled, but I can say that I own it, and it is fantastic. I've yet to hear of any issues with picture/sound/extras... and I certainly didn't notice any myself. The disc is fantastic. One of the best I've gotten in 2003.

how is the mono soundtrack compared to the dts track? when i had it (traded it because i didn't like it too much), the dts track was amazingly loud, and realistic sounding, and i don't think the mono track could do the film justice (i know it was a tv movie, but the dts would i would think blow the mono away)

I watched it in DTS, then out of curiosity i flipped on the mono track....couldnt stand more than a minute of it, just had to go back to DTS. To hear the truck blaring behind you in your theatre room is just AWESOME! Everything on this DVD was so well done i can never understand why they recalled it!
