Does anyone buy the full screen and OAR versions of DVD's?
Just curious, I know there are some serious collectors of certain properties. Does anyone buy, or know anyone who buys, both the full screen and widescreen versions of a given DVD?

I have a 4:3 TV right now, so I usually buy Fullscreen when given the option. However, I do plan to own a Widescreen set once they come down to reasonable prices, so on "Limited Releases" I buy the Widescreen version, or sometimes both depending on my budget that week.

Groucho, I don't know if you're being serious, but your having a "standard" TV set has nothing to do with widescreen DVDs. I have a plain 10-year-old 27-inch Sony and I watch widescreen DVDs on it without a problem. Just because the DVD is widescreen, doesn't mean your TV has to be, as well. I actually prefer it that way. I LIKE the "black bars". The bigger, the better!

You're missing the point. Groucho is subtly satirizing people who buy tons of DVDs each week, including multiple versions of some, and claim they're holding off buying widescreen TVs until they're cheaper.

I buy movies in their original aspect ratio whenever I can. I prefer anamorphic transfers and actually am starting to avoid letterboxed widescreen DVD's. Often movies I like, such as Bound or Pee Wee's Big Adventure, aren't available with anamophic transfers so i'm stuck with the letterbox version. It makes more of a difference now that I have a widescreen TV.

I"m surprised more studios don't go the the Resevior Dogs route and split features across two individuals sales sets(OAR and Fullscreen). Oh god I probably just gave them an awful idea, we'll have to buy two discs for all the extras.

Nope.
With extremely few exceptions (I was given the original Vegas Vacation as a gift and I have the open matte DVD of "Help!") the only versions I buy are OAR.
However, I did choose the 1.85:1 version of The Evil Dead. I notice a few problems (IMO, it really should have been 1.66:1 anamorphic)... but it's little to complain about.

Well, I did it for the first time today! Because of the T3 madness and whether or not the "OAR" version is misframed or not, I purchased BOTH full screen and "OAR" versions. Normally I would of course only choose OAR, but with this title and the uncertainity I decided to also pick up the full screen to see what all the fuss was about... Turns out (from what I could tell visually) that the "OAR" version is zoomed in on all four sides and the full screen is "better" in some cases. So, being the completist, I got both versions. Should be OK until the mess over this title is sorted out.
I do appreciate when the studios release both OAR and open matte versions of films on the same disc. For those of us with 4:3 sets the open-matte version adds more vertical picture while not cropping the picture horizontally. When I get my 16:9 set, I will watch the OAR anamorphic version of course.
