I'd also be pissed about the number of DVDs I've already bought.

Of course. But, I'd focus on the positive aspects ...such as still being able to listen to the commentaries.

I'd like to alter the original question to something more appropriate:

Lets say you became blind from watching too many DVDs, would you be pissed at the number of DVDs you had not seen?

Shouldn't this question be posted in the "You know you're addicted to DVD when..." thread ?

I've thought about this before as well, and I don't think I would be pissed. I would just miss watching my favorite movies! Same thing if I were deaf, I would miss listening to my favorite music and radio shows.

Well, if you would just stop doing what you are doing while you watch your DVD's that contain "strong sexual content", you wouldn't go blind to begin with.

Ranking of Blindness Concerns/Annoyances

1. General mobility issues (stairs, walking)
2. Not being able to read things
3. Not being able to drive
4. Difficulty of wiping own butt
5. No longer able to see beautiful woman, scenery, etc.
6. Having to learn braille
7. Not being able to watch movies/DVDs
8. Possibly eating/drinking something dangerous/gross
9. Not being able to play videogames
10. Looking like a fool in public because I mismatched clothes, combed hair goofily

DRG - how much do you need your eyes to wipe your butt? I mean, are you hunched over, peering at it? It's #4 on your list, so ... obviously this is a pretty visual activity for you ...

Yeah, DRG, I was wondering the same thing. How is this a visual activity? Perhaps some of us are not as limber as you, but it's a fairly touch sensitive task for most of us.

As for #10, you'll notice a lot of blind people where overcoats and hats.

It's a rare DVD feature, but there is something called Descriptive Video Service in which a narrator describes the scene in between sections of dialogue.

I think I have 1 DVD that has this feature, but I can't recall what movie it is right now.

I know of one DVD I have that has this feature (although I don't think it's called that...perhaps commentary for the visually impaired): Daredevil. It's pretty interesting stuff, but man, being a person who ISN'T visually impaired...the commentary for those of us can see, it would be described as "commentary by one old person to another one in the movie theater"....so every once in a while I put this commentary on to be able to yell "SHUT UP DAMN YOU, I'M TRYING TO WATCH THE FILM!" Laff....

Now that I think about it, I believe there's a Python film that has commentary for lonely people. Now THAT'S one where you just want to yell shut up. I think at one point the person in the commentary answers a phone.....

Oddly enough, earlier on today I was wondering about losing some senses...like if I lost two senses, which two would I prefer to lose? For me...it would be smell and taste. If you lost just smell, you'd not taste anyways....but seeing (movies) hearing (movies/music) and touch (sex) are just FAR too important.

On a very slightly, tangentially related note, a friend of mine whose brother is blind once told me he was jealous of his brother because he could watch scrambled pay per view movies and not notice the difference.

I always found that to be an...optimistic way to look at it. Although I guess those days are over, as there ain't tooo much scrambling out there anymore, pay per view or otherwise.

I believe Audio Description is available for most major Hollywood movies. While not on the DVD, I think special tapes are available for blind people to use. There's a couple of theaters around town that show a movie with AD once a week. I wonder if the AD version of a film comes as a commentary on a VHS (or DVD) or if it's just a cassette tape? Because, think about it... it wouldn't need the video portion so just a tape with the soundtrack and AD track would be necessary.

One of the public access channels shows old movies on Sunday mornings w/ AD. Kind of interesting to listen to.
