yes. me too. i used to buy blindly. not any more now.

Hmm... a little. But that's only because I spend more on other things than before. Otherwise, I'm still a DVD hog.

I'm buying more than ever, but I'm also agressively selling off DVDs that I don't really care for so the total size of my collection has actually been shrinking.

I used to buy a LOT of DVDs and have just stopped cold turkey as of last week. I joined Netflix. It costs me $0.72 a day so that something like Taken (which sells for $70) would take me at most 8 days or $5.76 to rent. A movie would take three days at most or $2.16 (I'm including watching the extras). I made a spreadsheet and will write down when Netflix sent the DVD, when I got it, when I sent it, when Netflix got it back, and when Netflix sent the replacement along with how long it took to watch a movie or series and the cost of renting vs the lowest price on DVDPricesearch.com. I will post results after a year. I have my first three DVDs that I can start watching tonight (disc 1 and 2 of the series Evolution and 2 Fast 2 Furious). Once I realized that Netflix gets ALL the TV series I would want to buy, I had no more concerns.

There are only 5 series that I will keep: ER, Buffy, Angel, X-Files, and Smallville. I'll keep buying Pixar and Disney.

I just remodeled my kitchen (beaucoup bucks) so I am trying to make a concerted effort to buy less DVDs. I used to buy everything I wanted on street date, but now I am trying to pare that down to absolute must-haves. I used to buy a lot of recent theatrical hits on street date, but now I only do that if a) I know I'll like it based on the reviews and b) I can get it really cheap.

If it's an art-house movie I heard good things about, I am going to try and find it eventually at Hollywood Video or somewhere used for cheap. Those movies are usually $20 or higher on street date. I have been going to the theatre much less this year, which also means fewer DVDs I want to buy when they come out.

Also, I am cutting out all the TV box sets. I am only going to buy the shows I really like (such as Trek, HBO shows etc.). If it's a show I think I want and I can get a great deal, I'll only buy the first season and wait until I have watched it all to decide on subsequent seasons. These shows were coming out too fast to buy and watch them all.

My buying has not decreased. In fact, if I had more money, it would increase.

Same here, my son is 2 months old and the wife had a complicated pregnancy and was off for about 2 months. Last week I was able to buy my first dvd in about 3 months (talk about going nuts) and it felt good. I can start buying more now, but gone are the days of buying 2-6 a week.

I'm buying less DVDs for a couple reasons:

First, financial. Money just ain't coming in the way it used to

Second, when I first got my player I was running through Columbia House buying all the catalog titles I wanted but didn't get a chance to buy before. After awhile you have all the catalog titles you want and there's nothing left but the new releases.

I dont have enough dvds. I rarely buy dvds new because they are rediculously expensive. I try and save myself some cash by buying them used. Never less and always more....now where can I find some money??

The other option is to find cheaper DVD's . . . DeepDiscountDVD is good for this, playing the "Columbia House game" can get you a bunch for a good price, check the Bargain forum for coupons, codes, and sales, etc.

For example . . . I just got 6 DVD's for $17.40 from my Columbia House sign up . . . I still have to buy 2 more for ~$20 a piece, but that is still a total of 8 DVD's for less than $60 which is about $7.50 a pop.

It's all about planning knowing where to go. :D

I have slowed down considerably. I haven't bought a DVD for about a month. Something that would have been sacrilegious a few months prior. I have also decided to not buy anything until summer....don't ask me why, but I did. The only movies that will be added to my collection anytime soon are the ones that I receive as presents. Yeah Christmas!

I hit 250 recently and I'm starting to feel as if I've covered all the basics, the movies I love and needed to onw. There are very few older movies I want to have on DVD now, I'll probably end up buying mostly new movies as they are released now.

Probably buying more around this time of the year as opposed to earlier on but still buying as much now on the whole as i ever have...if there isn't a R1 release that takes my fancy on a particular release date there is nearly always something coming out in R2/R3 that compensates for it.

In a way, yes. I've become more choosy in my purchases, and with Netflix that's helping with pricier TV shows and movies I didn't want to own but had an interest in seeing (like The Hulk).

But if there's something I really want I'll save up and buy it, I'm not going to go overboard but I'm not going to deny myself sweet DVDness either.

Buying less. I use to spend $100 - $200 dollars on DVD's in any given week. Now as of late, I may buy one or two every week or two. Infact, yesterday was my most expensive day in quite sometime, as I broke down and bought LOTR:TTT EE and The Honeymooners set, which ended up costing $78 dollars altogether.

my buying habits have calmed a bit in the last 6 months. i think because i have almost every release available that i want. the only DVDs that i buy now are older films (that i rent first), or new releases.

maybe it's bc i dont have enough free time anymore, or I'm more money cautious, or maybe i just think more about each purchase now. i make far less blind buys.

behind a bit. need to pick up pumping iron and things of the recent past few weeks but just lack of funds has kicked my buying habits back some. damn holiday season.

This has been a big year for purchasing, but I think next year is going to be a huge slow down for me.

I still buy way too many DVDs. Although I have flatlined any DVD that I have never heard of at a cheap price. But, anything that I want, I buy. Why not? I spent 5 years being a broke college student, it's time to start spending that money I didn't spend during college :D

I have a combination of factors that has slowed my buying to a crawl.

I started serious buying when I joined this site and found the wonders of Columbia house. When my daughter was born I got into the Disney DVD frenzy. Now that I have most of the Animated catalog there's little I need.

I've also found that I'm not really a collector. I never got into VHS tape buying, or laserdiscs, and I see why know. The shine of the new is off the DVD player and the DVD collection kinda sits there. Most of my collection I don't re-watch.

I just got LotR TTT EE for $8 (STL and Gift Cert) and I'll pick up Kill Bill and PoTC, but there's not much else out there I'm itching to own.

Finally I don't have the time to watch. We got a Gift Card to Blockbuster for $50 last X-mas, and I have $28 left on it still.

Libby, you are spoiled. DVD's are, for the most part, dirt cheap. You must not remember the prices for VHS and Laser Discs.

I'm buying a little less than normal, but that's just because Christmas is coming up and I'm trying to get all of my buying done for me :-)
