As an English major, I'm buying fewer DVDs ;)
I've been trading a lot though, so I still have lots of new discs coming in. |
I'm buying less now, mostly new releases, since I have everything that is out right now that I want, that is why my collection is almost 1,000 DVD's.
|
I buy at least 1 a week but its useually 3 or 4 a week and every once in awile I wont buy any but I also have a video game habbit also,so right now with all these DVDs and games coming out my wallet has been a little short.
|
I only buy more and more...I cant help it. I've been collecting for 3 years. I keep saying I'll cut down....but then I'm like...WHY? I'm building a library....a complete personal library. I need to keep buying because there are so many titles I'm lacking, even with over 1,300 titles in my collection. I'm buying around 10 a week and this will continue until I have all I need. tomorrow I'll be spending about $250 and the next week...about the same.
had to go down to the federal building today to meet with the IRS. must be running my buisiness well because they were very cool and actually saved me about $500!!! now, I could either put that back for next quarters taxes or treat myself. guess what I'm gonna do?:D |
I can honestly say that my DVD purchasing has hit an all time low. Its not just the financial side, but just no time to sit down and watch the ones I have already. Luckily though if I do buy a DVD its with a GC that I have gotten through doing a test drive or other means (on-line surveys or SASE BB dollars), so the wallet isnt effected too much.

Lately I buy a little less and rent a lot more, which ends up a net gain in shows I watch. I have bought most, but not all, of the films and TV shows I want (except upcoming seasons to be completed). I'm renting a lot of older films to bring me up to speed as a cinephile (and there's a LOT of classic films to see, even things like V and Soylent Green), but I also rent the marginal new releases.
November purchases: The Powerpuff Girls Movie Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines The Powerpuff Girls: Powerpuff Bluff The God of Cookery King of Comedy King of Beggars The Matrix Reloaded Total: About $65 |
YES!!!!!!!!!! my credit card balance is about $573, after buying TTT-EE tommorow I;m not buying any until February at the earliest,
|
I had so many upopen on my shelf that I will now only buy those titles I would rush home and see straightaway.
T3, TTT EE, X2, Pirates of the Carribean and Alien Quadrilogy are possbly my only purchases until Feb |
I'm new to the DVD collection era. I got my first DVD (Matrix) and a player for my birthday in March. I caught the DVD bug around April, and I now have according to DVDprofilier 392. The only limit I set was at least 30 new discs a month. I think once I finally reach 1000 I may slow down, then again, I've never been one to believe in the power of precognition.
Tomorrow will be another big DVD day for me. I have never rented a DVD. |
Only about 30 more DVD's to go for older releases, than it'll just be new releases from there on out...hopefully....
Its funny how buying habits come and go....earlier this yr I was trying to get as many as I could...than all of the sudden it donned on me that I have waaay too many, so I cut back... It just consumes you after awhile. it becomes an idol if your not careful. |
I've pretty much replaced most of my LD's with their DVD counterparts and have most of my wanted catalog titles, so I now concentrate just on new releases.

Originally posted by Artman it becomes an idol if your not careful. a few years ago, I said 1,000 dvds would do me. now I'm saying 1,800....and I know thats a joke too. I cant lie to myself though. I'll be lucky if I stop at 2,000.http://www.stopstart.freeserve.co.uk/smilie/errrr.gif I've never rented either....but I do with video games. yes, 40 year olds play too!!:D |
Because of "DVDTalk Forum", I have boughten less DVDs. Before this site, I would just buy anything at any price. Now with DVD Bargin Forum and Reviews, I limit what I buy.
|
I definitely buy a lot less with the advent of online rentals. No longer do I have to deal with the big chains that only stock the latest crap to hit the shelves. I can rent some of the more rare DVDs (mainly Criterion) that I used to have to purchase if I ever wanted to see them.
I used to buy 3-4 per month but now I'm lucky to buy one. This time of year, however, makes it tough to keep purchases to a minimum. I'll end up buying more in November-December than I have the rest of the year combined. |
I've bought less but I think it's because of the quality of movies that are coming out recently. I haven't been all that enthused about buying any of the major summer blockbusters and have been just buying movies that I think are really worth buying. I guess i'm just cheaper now.

I'm a big advocate of netflix now. I started buying way too many and after a while I decided to spend that cash on a new HDTV and some minor upgrades to my sound system. I'll start collecting again when HD-DVD is not only available, but affordable. I watched Remember the Titans on ABC in HD a couple of months ago and it just blew me away how much better it looked than even my best DVDs and it was only 720p. I'm hoping, probably foolishly, that HD-DVD ends up being 1080p since that's where display tech is heading already (the players can easily downsample 1080p to 480p, 720p or 1080i to match your display).
Not all HD is created equal though. I've seen quite a bit of HD programming but nothing has topped that airing of Remember the Titans for me yet. |
Definitely. I don't do the CH thing as much as I used to, I don't have many impulse buys. I just buy the DVD's I really really want nowadays.
|
I wish I was buying less but as DVD's continue to get more popular more stuff gets released. As there are more choices each week there is more of a chance something really catchs my eye. So in turn I am buying more which means the old ones stay on the shelf and don't get watched for now.
|
Well I reached my point of diminishing returns, when I was buying new stuff to get the first week price, and not watching it until the price dropped. Out of give or take 200 DVD's, I'd say 33 percent of my collection was unwatched, and another 10 percent was underviewed(I'd watched the film but none of the extras or commentary). I made a rule that I wouldn't buy anything that wasn't at a convention(I mean you can only get that stuff at a convention or show, so you've got to buy that) until I watched ALL of my DVD's and I've found it to be quite enjoyable, and I"m still no where near getting through them. So I'd say I slowed, but I will pick up the pace again after getting through the back catalogue.
|
lets see...today i got 6 dvds (CH :) )...the time it took me to buy my last 6 dvds before that...about 8 months...so i dont think im buying less.
|
Yeah, I'm buying less. Thanks to CH and their retarded new rules, I'm taking a breather for a few months or more, and starting to concentrate on box sets.
|
I really don't buy dvds anymore... TiVo takes up most of my free time.

Yep I remember when I used to have about 12-15 preorders a month already lined up for the next 3 months, right now I'd be surprised if I have 12 pre-orders for the next 3 months. For me it's mainly a matter of the DVDs coming out I'm just not interested in. For the most part I have all the current titles that I really want so I'm just waiting on new stuff coming out and the selection has been rather slim IMHO over the past (and upcoming) few months.
