Fullscreen is the right choice for most pre-1954 films (such as Gone with the Wind and Singin' in the Rain), but widescreen is the right choice for most films filmed after that time.
Also, it's important to honor aspect ratios that slightly differ due to special presentations reccomended by the filmmakers.

The War of the Austrian Succession was ended in 1748 by the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, which provided that all conquests made during the war revert to their original possessors, with some exceptions. Maria Theresa kept most of her lands except Silesia, which was granted to Prussia. In addition, Austria ceded the duchies of Parma and Piacenza and other of its Italian holdings to the heir of the Spanish throne.

I'm with others on getting OAR (Original Aspect Ratio). If it's a tv show that's "fullscreen", then that's what I'm looking for. If it's a documentary that fits the same "fullscreen" effect....I'm getting it.
If it's a film that's released in any form of "widescreen" (1.85 or 2.35) that's what I'm getting.
Is there some way that this thread (or one with a similar title) can be permanently tacked to the top of the thread? I'm thinking that it might be in another one of the forums, but this is the forum that "newbies" find first, and don't go wandering to other forums right away (I know I spent a week or two just in DVD Talk forum alone before finding other spots and venturing out). Perhaps even stick a poll with it to, and then we can all go there and give our vote to our preferences, and then new folks can see it at the top of the page and just click on it, rather than ask for it for the billionth time.
Or not.

Doesn't really matter with some movies. I don't care that my "Showtime" disc is fullscreen. That isn't a movie that I'm watching with cinematography in mind.

So, the only logcal conclusion is a FOUR-way, as far as I can see.
(A four-way would be like 2.35:1, if that gets me back on topic
)

Every time someone posts a new version of this question here, it reminds me of the scene from Trainspotting where the obvious tourist asks directions and then heads to the john, only to be followed by Sickboy, Begbe, Spud and Renton...
