Xmen 2: Why in the world?

I was just looking at the X2 DVD site, and found out that....

Japan got in SEPTEMBER

France got it in OCTOBER

and Mexico, Spain, and other parts of Latin America and Europe get it in 4 days

They get three editions, one disc wide screen, two disc "Extreme edition", and ultimate X Men collection with XMen 1.5

Why in the world do I have to wait til the 25th?

And if I can buy it already from Japan or Europe, anyone have a link so I can have it now?

I have an extra Japanese single disc-er. The cover is MUCH cooler than what we're getting [it's holographic too]. Lemme know if you're interested..

What's even worse is that the disc was completed months ago, as reviews have been out for quite some time. I never understood waiting to release movies like this

It's all about the benjamins...It's being released the week of Black Friday, which'll make it the big thing to buy when everyone's cramming into the stores like tuna. This is opposed to releasing it before black friday and then having limited quantities in stores for the huge sale weekend.

Also would you really want to release your disc on some of the other BIG release weeks??

IE -- The Hulk, Indiana Jones, T3, LOTR Extended etc.

X2's only "real competition" that week is Bruce Almighty.

I know if I was an exec I wouldn't want that kind of comepetition for my $$.

Just my 2 cents worth, and yes I would have preferred to have this several months ago as well.

I don't understand this. You mean to say that if the DVD comes out earlier than Black Friday, it might get sold out and there might not be enough copies left to sell on Black Friday. What difference does it make? The discs get sold anyway. If they release before BF they get sold out earlier. In what way is making money earlier disadvantageous for studios?

I believe that hollywood studios likes to screw US consumers when it comes to releasing DVDs. There are many instances of movies getting 5 star treatment and DTS tracks in the non region-1 discs while the region 1 discs get short shrifted.

reviews of the a/v quality on the R2 japanese discs have been mediocre.
in contrast the reviews for the R1 have given high marks for the a/v.
i would have rather had it sooner also, but in this case i'll take later but better.

If you REALLY want the Japanese version I can pick it up for you - it'll cost you approximately double what the R-1 version costs though. List price is 3,300 yen, and discounts are hard to find (about $29.70 vs $17.99 for the R-1 version at Amazon.com), plus POSTAGE, which is ALSO not cheap! Here I am in Japan and I've been waiting for the R-1 version to come out!

I agree. The disc would have have sold quite a few regardless of when it was released. Besides, reviews for the disc were out months ago. I'm sure there was at least a couple weeks that didn't have a "big" release.

i saw the Hong Kong 2 disc tin-box set edition on sale in Toronto today. packaging looks nice but i heard people complaining about the discs were kept. they use some kinda soft foam to protect it from damage but overall, it looks nice from the outside.

it costs $33 canadian.

I'm still holding out for the 9-disc super-duper special extended edition with a four hour shot of Rebecca Romaijn-Stamos smearing oil on her naked body that's only going to be released in a limited edition of 14 copies in Uganda.

i can't remember were i read it (avsforum, maybe?) i believe it was a review from a consumer as opposed to an internet site (but i could be mistaken).
it ended with something like "i wish i had waited for the R1 release".
or something like that.

at the time i was ticked too over having to wait so long to get on of the summers earliest releases, but Japanese imports on the whole seem way over priced to me.
maybe its just cause i got burned a summer back with Dark Angel (almost $200 for the first 11 episodes and pilot), but in a case like this i don't mind waiting.
especially since there are many weeks in between with major releases to take my mind off it.

It's the same reason that movie studios save their big releases for "event weekends" like memorial day, the fourth of july, week before christmas, etc. They could release it anytime they want and make just as much in the long run but it gives them a better opportunity to come up with a marketing campaign...i'm sure we'll be pummeled with ads like "this thanksgiving, own the dvd you've been waiting for...X2!"

Considering BIG releases sell a good 25% of their DVD's (in the DVD's first year) the first week they are released, it makes perfect sense for a studio to be picky about the release date. Most people will buy 1 or 2 DVD's a week and since most stores sell at a big discount the first week of a DVD's release people will buy what is being released that week. When you start having 5-10 big releases in a single week people will start picking and choosing as opposed to staggered releases where people end up buying more of the big releases. If you try to put X-Men 2 up against Indy, T3 etc in the same week you end up with a lot less sales then looking for a more profitable date that maximizes your sales the first week.

Good explanation.

well, for 8 bucks, it was definitely worth a peek. (yeah...ok! so i bought a pirate copy, big deal! i'm upgrading to the R1 version anyway)

but anyway, it was a direct copy of the japanese R2 edition. a/v quality was simply to drool for. i have a 20 inch TV and even then, i could tell that it's very sharp and full of vibrant colours. and in addition to that, i tried it on a big widescreen TV. it looked even better. 5.1 sounded very loud and had a deep bass. DTS enhanced it big time.

i think this reviewer u mentioned is only complaining about the amount of extras. and i have to admit, it was light on extras.

Also remember that on Black Friday, people will be in the stores with more money than normal and will more likely to buy X2 with that extra cash on an impulse than they would otherwise.
