Close Encounters of the Wrong Kind
Let me say right up front I think CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF A THIRD KIND is a great film. However, I do have some issues with the current dvd. First off I think it is too bad we can't have the revised version that was on laser disc. What we have on dvd is the new version plus the old version combined into one. The scene where Richard Dryfuss goes 'crazy' in his house and starts throwing plants out the window seemed to go on forever and was cut from new version, but we are stuck with it again in this dvd. Another problem I have with this transfer is with the black levels most apparent in the night scenes of the sky. The night sky looks like some shade of purple with other color balance problems. Is this the best Columbia can do with this transfer?

The transfer wa discussed at length a year or two ago when this was originally released, but I don't know if the thread is still around. You might want to run a search.

I have watched the dvd on 3 different t.v. & dvd players and it does look different on each.
Not that it looked great but not as bad as I saw on my set.
I had the 2 laserdiscs and those looked great on the t.v. that the dvd looked bad on.
