Is Reservoir Dogs worth upgrading to the 10-yr. Anniversary SE?
I have the old, OOP Reservoir Dogs. I'm wondering from someone that has seen both this version and the 10-year SE version, is it worth upgrading in regards to video quality, etc?

Search for the threads on the disc in the Main Forum... there was a lot of debate over whether or not they had screwed up the transfer and framing.

I regretted upgrading and actually went to Overstock.com to repurchase the original out-of-print version. The transfer on the 10th anniversary edition is awful (a few shots are misframed, but the colors are muted throughout and there is no black level at all). There are also several lines of dialog missing that were accidentally dropped when they did the 5.1 channel remix.

Personally, I say yes. Although the transfer wasnt perfect, nor near even close, the extras are definily worth it. If you can get a good price on it, I say yeah
|
...as for me, I prefer waiting until the Super Duper Ultra-DeLuxe Severely Limited Extra-Special three-disc Platinum 25th-Anniversary HD-DVD comes along...
. . . :o . . . |
Don't look at it as an upgrade. It's a supplement. You will end up keeping both.
|
Get it for the extras, but don't consider it an upgrade.
And don't even think about ditching the copy you already have until you've at least seen the new transfer. |
I'm not one to tweak the factory settings on my DVD player but the 10th anniversay Reservoir Dogs release is one disc I found improved to a startling degree by boosting the contrast and cutting the brightness levels. One great and treasured double disc set !

This DVD is definitely worth it, especaily considering you can get it dirt cheap off of DDD (http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=LVD013147). Granted, the picture quality isn't the greatest but the supplements are pretty good and it's well worth a double dip alone for the extras, especially for only $10 for a 2 disc.

Consider for a moment that this is an Artisan DVD. If they can release Star Gate, Terminator 2, and Dirty Dancing three times, then they can do the same for Reservoir Dogs.

Looks the the 10-yr. SE is only $10 new at DDD. I think i'll pick it up from there later this week.

This may be one of the best(and perhaps my favorite) collection of extras I"ve seen. If your a Tarantiofile, it's a must have. And the price it goes for now(and you can usually get it for less than 10 bucks on sale) definately upgrade!

I saw both versions, but I didn't notice any of the problems listed here. I own the 10 year anniversary version. Its good.
|
I can live with the transfer, I don't think it's that bad, but the missing dialogue is inexcusable, and I can't really suggest the "Ten Years Special Edition" until Artisan makes good on their promise to fix it.

I heard Artisan is working on the problems with the disc, and may offer a free replacement sometime in early 04.
|
I've been instrumental in getting the replacement offer going by e-mailing Artisan directly and through my contact with them I can tell you that while they've acknowledged the audio issue, they haven't acknowledged the video.

I e-mailed every Artisan e-mail address I could get my hands on and the only one that yielded any results was [email protected]. Unlike the e-mail addresses that were available online, I saw M. Casillas credited on the "T2 Extreme" DVD and figured out his e-mail based on his name and the format of the known Artisan e-mail addresses. Luckily, it worked. Last I heard from him, he said the replacements should have been ready by September. Since then, he's stopped responding to me, but from what I understand, others have gotten responses saying that a corrected disc may be available by the beginning of next year. Hopefully, the delay will be to address the video issues as well. As I said before, I don't think the transfer is unacceptable, but it could be better.

Thanks for the info Guru... I'll be sure to send off an email, as I hope others will too. I suppose it would be best to stress the video issues, since they seem to have acknowledged the audio stuff. For those interested in side-by-side screenshot comparisons, check out the IGN review:
