Ever Caught a Friend Stealing Your DVD's?
 

About 2 weeks ago I did my monthly inventory and I noticed that The Ring and Phone Booth were missing. I know I hadn't let anyone borrow them so I was kinda pissed. Well last weekend I went to a friends house and he has about 10-12 DVD's and of course... there are 2 more added to his collection. The Ring and Phone Booth!! I ask him about it and at first he tries to lie about it and say that he bought them the week before at circuit city. After asking to see the receipt, which he didn't have, I just grabbed them and walked out. He hasn't said anything about them since, which shows his guilt obviously. Anyone ever had a similiar experience?

I've actually watched friends steal things from me (not DVDs)... pretty bogus!
I have had DVDs stolen, however.

My mother in law borrowed 4 dvd's without letting me know once. Drove me insane, trying to find them. Then I mentioned it in passing and she said Oh, when I cleaned your house last week, I borrowed them, sorry! I was like It's ok, you can keep them as long as you want, it was just irking me that I thought I had misplaced them and couldn't find them. She cleaned our house, the least we could do is lend her a few dvd's.
But that, admittedly, is a different situation from yours. It could have been coincidence, but it doesn't sound like it. Sorry : (

When does it change from simply borrowing for a REALLY long time and stealing?

Lent my HP DVD's to a friend for his kids to watch and haven't seen them (the dvd's) since. Been a little over a month now I think. :(

I especially hate when friends-of-friends come over and ask to borrow a DVD. It's like, "Man, I don't even know you why would I let you borrow my stuff." And of course they always try to say that they'll give it back to me in a week when they know that I will never see them again. Since my previous episode I have made a sign above my collection stating not to ask to borrow anything and I'm looking for a DVD storage cabinet with a lock on it, because as you can see by the picture below.. it's very easy to just take something and me not notice.

That friend of yours sure has some nerve! I think I would have had a few choice words for him before walking out.

Yesterday I was going over my collection (alphabetizing, making sure my excel spread sheet was updated, and simply chortling over my precious, precious babies) when I realized THREE DVD's where missing. I was furious. I began to rant and swear. I accused my girlfriend's brothers of stealing them (they are the only ones ever in the house when we are not there). I worked myself up into a righteous fury until my girlfriend pointed out that all three were movies we had watched in the last month.
Now, what I do when I am done with a movie is place it on top of my DVD shelf, usually 3-5 stack up before I reshelve them. I pulled the shelf away from the wall and found all three, dusty but safe.
Man, I feel like an A-hole. Luckily I didn't accuse the boys directly, just to their sister.

Sure, but the sucka paid the price w/ one of his hands when I @#$%ing chopped it off w/ my tanto. Got blood all over the living room. Good thing I got wood floor instead of damn carpets. Would've been a mess otherwise.

I'm appalled! Making sure your spreadsheet is updated? The first stop for a new DVD at my house is at the computer to be properly cataloged and recorded. I know my spreadsheet is updated and it's been entered in DVD Profiler.

You stack up 3-5 before reshelving them??? You don't carefully return each disc to it proper place after using it?

I think your "precious, precious babies" need to be placed in a foster home! :D

I haven't run into this problem, but I've got eight of the Can-am 3 drawer locking cabinets, and I do lock them whenever we're got service people in our home.

To avoid this problem, just don't invite them over. I always go to their houses. Also don't borrow from others if you do want them to borrow from you. Several years ago I lent two vhs tapes to a friend, still havent gotten it back 5 years and counting....

They are not your friends if they steal from you.

Yeah, I know what you mean there. I let my roommate's friend borrow Final Fantasy: TSW and it took my about a month a half to get it back. I'd see him every two weeks or so and I ask about it, and he'd be like "Oh yeah, man, I'll get that back to you as soon as possible" then it'd be another two weeks and still no DVD. Finally, it was like the day before Christmas break and I was just about to chalk it up as a loss when my roommate tells me that the guy dropped off the movie the night before. I was happy to get it back, but I decided that's the last time I loan a DVD to somebody that I don't see everyday.

I have friends who borrow books, CDs and games from me and never returned it. Fortunately I never let that happen to my DVDs.

While I don’t doubt your friend took those from you, if I buy something I probably would not have the receipt a week later :eek:

I can handle friends stealing from me, but family? That's just wrong, man. Wrong. :(

I have never actually knowingly had a DVD stolen, but I once lost a DVD, Life Of Brian Criterion. There is the possibility that a friend of my then girlfriends who came to the house round that time had taken it, because he had recently bought a DVD player.

It also seemed odd that it was that one, because at the time it was quite expensive to buy and not that easy to replace (eventually did a part ex deal with some movies I wanted to get rid of, and replaced it).

There are very few places in my house it could be, I never leave films anywhere but close to the player itself, and usually put them back in the rack anyway. And I definitely did not lend it to anyone else.

Cannot be sure it was him, of course. Would never accuse anyone unless I was sure.

But I do hate that syndrome of people who beg you to let them borrow a film, then they keep the damn thing for months, and every time you ask them if they have seen it, they say they have not had time. And when they finally give it back, you just know they have not even bothered to watch it - they usually say "Uh, it was ok".

With people like that, I just never give them any more movies, friends or not.

My ideal lender is someone who borrows a movie, tells you when they are going to watch it and actually watches it ( so you have an idea when you are likely to get it back), and brings it back on time.

You gotta put restrictions on people, otherwise they will treat you like a goddam video store.

Good stuff. I have 2 three-drawer and 1 2-drawer cabinets and am about to place another order. By far, the best out there, albeit pricey.

I have never had a friend steal anything from me. I have very high standards for friends.

To dtcarson, your mother-in-law stole your DVD's. That is what we call borrowing without permission where I come from. I realize that she may have meant well, but she needs to be made to understand that she borrowed nothing, but rather stole your DVD's or she will continue this sort of behavior.

My wife lent five DVD's to her boss once. I didn't see them for a month and I pestered my wife into asking for them. It turns out he didn't even watch them. I had a roommate who I believe hocked some of my CD's and a couple of old comic books at a pawn shop.(He was between jobs and needed money and they suddenly disappeared in time for him to have money.)

One of my best friends got into my house while I was away from home or on vaction and borrowed some DVDs from me.

He is like a part of my family and I would trust him with anything, so he just told me he had them and everything was cool.

I also borrow DVDs from him, when he has something I do not have - which is not often.

That's wrong on so many levels. :lol:

I've got a very select group that I don't mind lending to. I learned my lesson in college with albums and Video tapes. The people I will lend to now are those that I would gladly give the disc to if they wanted them.

Okay, this isn't about DVDs but about an lawnmower. My friend borrowed it and has kept it for years; I really had no use for it anymore since I landscaped my house with rocks. I really didn't mind but one day he brings it back and says it broke down. He had the nerve to ask me to get it fixed since it was mine.

Not friends, but an ex-girlfriend refused to return 6 or 7 DVDs after the break up.

Never caught a friend stealing them. Luckily, these days I don't have many friends locally. I travel so much that most of my friends are people I was friends with in other cities or friends from online.

I did loan my ex-wife about 6 DVDs back in July when I dropped my daughter off after she visited me. Two months later, I asked if she'd finished the DVDs and she said she'd only had time to watch a couple of them. By October and another visit by my daughter I asked her to just send them back with my daughter. Shockingly (NOT!), the DVDs were not packed in my daughter's bag like I asked. I asked her to just mail them back now, but we're coming up on 4 months now! The ex and I get along great and are very friendly, so it's not some sort of contentious thing. I just think anybody borrowing DVDs should return them in a time frame of less than 3-4 months!!

one of my wifes friends stole return to oz from me...i noticed it the next day, and narrowed it down to him....i went over there and put a foot up his ass and told him never to come into my home again...i wont tolerate it.

The reason why i asked him is because he keeps receipts for EVERYTHING that he buys. He has a file cabinet that he keeps receipts for CD's, clothes, furniture, etc. So I knew he would have the receipt if he actually did buy them.

Haha, some nerve he has.. that's messed up.

Does anyone have closed circuit video monitoring on their DVD collection? You never wonder what happened to a DVD this way. :D

I only have about 250 DVDs and they are all in a changer. If someone comes in and tries to borrow and DVDs I just tell them it is a pain to figure out what slot it is in, find the case, etc.

Trying to steal dvd's off my shelves wouldn't be the wisest idea. Because my watchdog would have disemboweled the culprit before ever getting near them. :D:D:D

But to tell you the truth, I don't borrow dvd's to my friends and i don't even have a darn dog. ;) The only one I trust is my dear brother. He knows how to handle my babies. He also knows, that maltreating them would result in fatal injuries. :D

My dvds are in my room & I simply have a lock on my door which opens with a key only. Dont keep them on display in your living room...it only attracts more attention of people asking to borrow & the word spreading that you have dvds so one day they, god forbid, get stolen since dvds are such a hot item for thieves nowadays.

on my last birthday,I had a dvd and splinter cell stolen off me,the dvd was only about 9.99,it was the splinter cell that hurt,my grandmother paid 49.99 for it for my birthday present,what stinks is she is on a fixed income and 49.99 is a lot for her.I knew it was my friend mike,the game was thier at 9.30 pm,he asked if he could borrow it,I said he could as soon as I beat it,what happen next was I had too much to drink and fell asleep,when I awoke the next day it was gone.it was him,he was the only 1 there after 9.30 pm.I knew him for 10 years,can`t believe he do such a thing.
