ouch! 9 episodes on disc one of married with children.

according to the first reviews, the disc has 9 episodes (thats right) on one dvd which is about 4 hours of information crammed on there. on the 2nd disc there's four episodes, plus the reunion special. There is apparently horrid compression from cramming so much into one disc. And there isn't a play all option.
I'll still pick this up since I've been waiting for this for a while, but this is very disapointing

PixyJunket 10-22-03 03:10 PM

Well.. I was really happy with how the 2 "Best Of" discs looked.. I'll reserve judgement until I have that baby in my hands 6 days from now.

Quake1028 10-22-03 03:25 PM

It's really only 3h 18m. Is that really that big a deal to cause so many problems? I mean, we aren't talking about 6.1 dts mixes here.

Exactly. It's only got a stero mix and no other special features or audio.. Two Towers is about that long with multiple audio choice AND is anamorphic (takes up more space).. and it looks pristine. If there is any problem with compression it's with the authoring of the disc.. but as I said before, the other discs look quite excellent and I woulod hope these season sets are similar.

Regardless.. even a few minor video problems aside (if they exsist), it's bound to be leaps and bounds over the THS copies people have been watching for so long, which are probably taped off of sydication usually meaning a minute or so of the show being cut off, and then of course station bugs.. nothing is going to be bring me down of my happy cloud with this DVD set, can't you tell?

:)

jmj713 10-22-03 03:47 PM

And the episodes should have the full opening credits, right?

If they follow the format of the "Best Of' discs, yes.. both open and close.

Iron Chef 10-22-03 04:03 PM

Does it have an insert?

Actually 2.35:1 anamorphic takes up less space than a 4:3 screen. It's about the same as a 1.85:1 non-anamorphic encode.

10/28/03: The Greatest Day in DVD History <--- 6 days left!
You can say that again. Actually, maybe not the greatest, but most definitely the costliest, cause I'm getting the following all on 10/28: The Sopranos 4-season pack, Looney Tunes 4-disc set, MWC Season 1, Spike Jonze, and 2 Criterions - Le Cercle Rouge and Tokyo Story. I also had The Hulk in that list and something else I'm forgetting, but I took those off. Ugh, the pain the pain... :)

Wow. For me it's just Al Bundy, the greatest American icon ever. Since I got my player in 99, this is what I've wanted more than anything else (yes, more than Good Burger!).. now I'm hoping that they stay on board with future seasons in a timely manner.

SideShow 10-22-03 05:07 PM

Mad About You: Season One has 11 episodes on each disc, and surprisingly they look pretty good. I wouldn't worry too much...

RobCA 10-22-03 05:42 PM

They did the same thing with Soap; 10 episodes on discs 1 & 2, and 5 on disc 3. :hscratch:

BTW, I didn't think Mad About You looked all that great. I wish they'd have made it a 3-disc set, like they did with season 2. (And where the heck is season 3?!) :(

Rob

Jackskeleton 10-22-03 05:48 PM

Hell, if you can put an episode on 200mb's and make it look good, you can fit 9 episodes on a 4gb disc and make it look great. ;)

jough 10-22-03 06:36 PM

Wow, next week is a HUGE week for dvd releases:

Looney Tunes 4-Disc
Le Cercle Rouge: Criterion
Tokyo Story: Criterion
Schitzopolis: Criterion
Apu Trilogy (via separate releases - Pather Panchali, Aparajito, and World of Apu)
Coupling: Complete 2nd Season
Hulk (already out at my local Walmart)

Wow, good week.

Corky Roxbury 10-22-03 06:48 PM

and spongebob season1 comes out next week

DVD Polizei 10-22-03 08:26 PM

I think the producers underestimated the intelligence of those who buy the box sets of Married With Children vs. those who only watch re-runs on the tube.

Smoke, smoke, smoke.

PixyJunket 10-23-03 07:26 AM

You know what? I am sad that there isn't a play all option.

cerial442 10-23-03 10:26 AM

The first season of the Osbournes had nine episodes on a disk, and the picture was good. So wait and see about this set.

Rypro 525 10-23-03 10:32 AM

whats this with full credits? even though f/x mostly cuts the credits to show commericals over top of the show, the opening credits are at its normal length right?

EPKJ 10-23-03 10:35 AM

I am just glad they are releasing season sets. I don't expect them to treat every series like Friends.

PixyJunket 10-23-03 10:43 AM

Nope.. the opening credits are shortened on reruns of shows.

Rypro 525 10-23-03 10:45 AM

what indeed did they cut out? I know the episodes are cut by a min or so on fx for commericals.

PixyJunket 10-23-03 10:47 AM

Just credits.. it's not even a big deal. Almost every show you watch in syndication has the credits shortened and a minute cut for commercials.

Imodium 10-23-03 11:05 AM

More like three hours, and that isn't that much, especially with virtually zero special features.

Should be fine.

DeanoBKN 10-23-03 11:38 AM

10/28/03....easily going to be my favorite day of the year.

Sorpranos season 4
Married...With Children season 1
WWE Smackdon: Here comes the plan (PS2)
Rainbow Six 3 (XBOX)
Top Spin (XBOX)

Only question is...where will I find the time?

PixyJunket 10-23-03 03:08 PM

Time.. time.. yeah I hear you.

Hopefully I can get this blasted DVD Player in my work PC working.. then I can free up some time for home when I need to play video games.

Scott27 10-23-03 05:23 PM

Guys, this is 1 review of the set. Wait until other reviews pop up (or even better - wait till you get the set in your hands and judge for yourself) before you start bitching about the quality of this release.

There is a "Play All" feature.

You joke me not?! :D :D :D

I have therefore confirmed this set is perfect.

Pac-Rat 10-23-03 06:33 PM

I would never joke about such a thing. :)

FWIW- It has the old opening. It's the one where in opens with the highway, then goes black with a "stamp" of the actors names against a black screen, then goes to the original "Al on the couch" skit. I haven't watched all the episodes, but I would assume they're all the same.

Rypro 525 10-23-03 06:37 PM

i think the "old" way is the way they did it for season 1 only. all the episdoes that i've seen start with the street (or the fountain shot), the stamp of the logo) the actors names with a little clip, and then usually, a big applause for each member of the family. (i hear they don't do that early on. was there a laugh track, or was this the actuall audience sound. And good news on the play all feature.

PixyJunket 10-23-03 06:44 PM

I re-read the review.. see I was thinking I read in the review there was no Play All.. ugh.. the things you THINK you read when you're sick and going to work anyway!!

Oh man.. Tuesday can't come soon enough!!

Rypro 525 10-23-03 08:43 PM

for those that do have it, how does the video and audio look and sound?

Ratchet-Tvd 10-23-03 09:46 PM

UhhuM! I though this was about Married with Childen, not video games.

PixyJunket 10-24-03 08:12 AM

In case anybody can wait on the mail (I know I can't!) Deep Discout DVD has it for $22.06.. Best Buy will have it for $22.99.

Groovy!! To the nudey bar!!

PixyJunket 10-24-03 10:03 AM

Where a buck's enough to see their stuff, at the nudie bar.
Where the breasts may be fake but man do they shake, at the nudie bar.
Where you swear like a sailor, and wish you could nail her, at the nudie bar.
Where the cops are at the door, and there's a Kennedy on the floor, at the nudie bar.
