I watched the first 2 episodes last night. The video is alright, I'll try to compare it later to the Best Of discs if possible. I think the video could've been better, but I don't think it has to do with how much is on the disc.

It is noticably better than watching it on TV that's for sure, and much better than the dozens or so tapes I have of random scattered episodes.

Picture quality is horrible. The quality is about the same as watching regular tv.

It does not even compare to a modern tv broadcast on cable.

that because it is not modern tv it is from the early 90's, the PQ is alot better than on the best of dvds and this is most likely the best quality we will ever see, so be happy we got these episodes at all

Oh make no mistake I am pleased to have the set.

But the picture quality is certainly not up the par with early 90s material.

It's a subpar transfer but I wouldn't say I expected a great transfer considering what the studios probably expected the target audience to be. I'm happy to have the set, but for those who were wondering, don't get your hopes up. Expect some of the worst pq in your collection.

Actrually it's from 87. Think about it, it was a new show on a brand new network. I'm sure it was filmed on a ;ow budget. I am finding nothing wrong with the PQ, and I'm almost done with disc 1. I would expect a marked improvement beginning with season 2, though.

I also have not found any problems with the quality and if anybody was going to be looking for it, it would've been me. It's not perfect, it is pretty much what I expected. I can tell you that is MUCH better than watching it on TV or on 7th generation tapes from TV.

You're comparing movies that were shot with the intent of being shown on 40-foot high movie screens with a TV show that was intended to be seen on 27-inch TVs?

Why don't you use something slightly more even, like comparing the sets to the Good Times, Jeffersons, or All in the Family DVD sets?

exactly... you can't compare a TV show with a movie... especially since most movies are finished on film (ie. neg cut) and a LOT of TV shows are finished on VIDEO... they probably mastered the DVDs from finished video masters... not original film negatives/prints like feature films. I think the quality is acceptable, especially for a show of this age and budget. I am just glad to have all of season 1.

Well the reason I made that comparison was because the picture quality in boxed sets for modern TV shows definitely hold their own in comparison to modern DVDs.

Again, apples & oranges. You're comparing the pq to both old *movies* and to *modern* tv shows. DO you see the problem with this?

MWC came out on Fox back in the late 80's, and was undoubtedly shot on video, with a low-budget.

And, having watched the first season, we found the pq and audio to be perfectly acceptable. The episodes are entertaining and video quality is not an issue at all. In fact, it kinda reminds me of the old days watching MWC on broadcast tv, which is how it *should* be.

Not everything has to be in ultra-sharp digital hires video to be enjoyable. It's the *content* that counts. I for one am glad they are releasing full seasons, and will continue to support them even without 'extras' or 5.1 sound remixes.

i will buy EVERY MWC box set released :)

I'm actually pretty sure that the episodes were shot on film, then transferred to video for editing/broadcast. back in the late 80s, it was painfully obvious what shows were shot on video- they all lacked depth, didn't have the full color pallette, etc. While Later seasons might have been video, I'm pretty sure the first seasons aren't.

That said, I haven't watched all the episodes in the box yet, just a few off of disc 1, and I can say that saying that they look horrible and are no better than broadcast TV is either really underrating the discs or overrating broadcast TV. They're really not THAT bad. And they're dozens of times better than my degrading VHS copies.

I just want the rest of the seasons, in a reasonable time frame(i.e. Friends-like, NOT Simpsons-like) so I can retire 3 shelves of VHS tapes :-)

No the comparison is: DVD of 2001 TV show to DVD of 2001 Box office movie:

The quality there is about equal.



Now:

DVD of 1989 TV show to DVD of 1989 movie

In the case of Married w/ Children to a 1989 movie, the movie looks much better.

And I think some people who think this looks better than the reruns on fx, maybe you got a special edition of this DVD?

The DVD looks EXACTLY the way the reruns on TV do.

And I'll reiterate, although I am not thrilled with the pq, I am definitely happy to finally see the sets are comming out. Can't wait until season 2, even if they don't improve over season 1.
