Whats A Good Space Documentary?

I just saw a cool space documentary in my General Science class it was called "7 Days In Space." Although a bit dated it was really interesting. It showed the shuttle launch, activities in space, and the re-entry.

I'm not really a big fan of documentaries but this one got my attention. Are there any cool space documentaries out there? If so where can I get them? I don't know if Walmart will have any.

Try "For All Mankind" as a Criterion Collection DVD. One iof my favorites.

The History channel recently ran a documentary called "Failure Is Not an Option" and it still may be airing in repeats...just your local listings.

You can also check out the commentary track by the real Jim and Marilyn Lovell on Apollo 13 for some fascinating background info. Not a documentary, but it provies some real accounts that are really interesting.

Those are a few to get you going!

Also, definitely look into Cosmos with Carl Sagan.

One of the best documentaries ever, space or otherwise IMO.

It's not so much about space technology though, but science and the nature of things.

It's available as a box set for $75-$100 USD.

Yeah, definitely Cosmos. I just finished watching the whole series for the first time a few days ago and it's amazing. digitaleyes.net has it for $72.98 and free shipping if you don't mind waiting a few days. If you've never ordered from there before, you can use the coupon code "IAMNEW" for $5.00 off (the code worked when I used it a few months ago, anyway).

There's also "Stephen Hawking's Universe," which I haven't seen yet, but if it's anything like his books, it should be excellent. Here's the description from digitaleyes.net (they have it for $44.98):

The complete six-program set of the PBS series, in which bestselling author Stephen Hawking (A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME) runs down the history of the universe, considering the various theories humans throughout time have proposed about the nature of being. Includes the hour-long programs "Seeing Is Believing," "The Big Bang," "Cosmic Alchemy," "On the Dark Side," "Black Holes and Beyond," and "An Answer to Everything."

As others have said.
US Manned:
For All Mankind deals with the Apollo program.
From Earth to Moon was a dramatization of the Apollo program with the first episode before Apollo 1. It' NOT a documentary. You might as well watch Apollo 13 or the The Right Stuff if you are into docudrama.
Failure Is Not An Option is a superb documentary about those who served and waited.

It's really scary how precarious each mission was. Considering the primative technology (by today's standards) it's truley amazing that anyone survived.

Space in general:
You won't be disappointed with either Cosmos or Stephen Hawking's Universe.

Yeah - Cosmos is Da Bomb. It was way back in the 80's, and the special edition discs with the revised notes are even more Da Bomb now. It really made science cool for The Common Man.

I just got back from Fred Meyer and I picked up "NASA - 50 Years Of Exploration" for $25. It has five DVDs and runs about 11 hours. I thought it was a good deal. It has stuff on all the Apollo missions, the Challenger tragedy, the Mars experiment, and also the Columbia tragedy. There's more but thats what I remember from the top of my head.

Thanks again for your help guys.

I'd second most of the above (esp. Esarth to the Moon) apart from the Carl Sagan junk.

Cosmos bored me to tears (with the exception of Vol. 1 or 2; can't remember).
