Advice on cleaning DVD "sticker crap"...
I got the Matrix Reloaded on DVD and I am very picky about how I open the DVDs with all the "security" stickers that they put on the top and right side of the case.
The front of the DVD has a little bit of "sticker slime" (you know what I mean), that came from a crappy sticker.
What can I use to clean this off without wrecking the case and sleeve? Call me anal, but I am sure many of you feel the same way.
Thanks!!

Not sure why it's on the sleeve. I always check to make sure the sleeve isn't sticking out from under, so when I pull off the stickers, it doesn't take some of the ink with it. Never really had the "sticker slime" to my knowledge. Not from a new DVD anyway. Don't get me started on previously viewed though.
My suggestion: Goo Gone. Works wonders.

No ink was lost. I'm not referring to the insert. The insert is safe. I am referring to the plastic sleeve slip that covers the insert. I am just worried about rubbing the slip too hard and making a mark, which has happened to me before.
I don't have Goo Gone or anything like that. I am thinking about stuff I can use from around the house.
Windex? =p

What I do is take one of the stickers that came off clean, apply an end of it over the gooey area (it's good to scratch it with a finger nail so it grabs all the goo) and rip it off in one quick motion. It works everytime.

Yes! This definitely works. Sometimes, if the residue is especially thick, I have to press down and lift off many times. But it always pulls all of the residue off.

If some of the sticker has ripped and stayed on . . . wet the sticker real well and rub it with your finger until all of the paper rubs off and you are left with the "goo" and then do the sticker thing (above) again.
I'm a real stickler about that too. "Stickler"? Is that a pun?

I second the recommendation of Goo Gone. Even though you don't have it right now, every house needs a bottle of Goo Gone. You can pick up a bottle at any Wal-Mart for less than $3 and it'll last you forever.

As punkmonkey stated earlier.....lighter fluid works wonders for sticker slime. Just apply a little on a rag, and rub on the offending area... just be sure not to smoke while applying.

I agree with lighter fluid. It works great. It can be safely used on paper too (just don't put too much on). I use it for all kinds of sticker, price tag, etc problems.

if you take off a sticker and it leaves behind the paper and is still stuck..... saliva!
may sound gross but easier than alcohol. take you tounge, make sure its plenty wet and put your tounge on the sticker (this only applies if you tried to peal it off and the paper part of the sticker is still there, you may want to rip it off on purpose and do this anyway as it makes a clean (no pun) way to get it off with no residue) and leave your tounge on it for as long as you think it takes to make it plenty wet. let it sit , but not to long before it dries. take your thumb and wipe it off. the sticker is gone and no residue left behind. it works for me everytime. I thought of this after trying countless things to get these off clean but reside was always left behind, you know...the damn glue.
trust me this works and much cleaner than wd-40, alcohol (which leaves a haze or makes it worse) ....etc

Lighter fluid! Every household needs a can of lighter fluid sitting around. It's cheap and works for all those kinds of sticky things which sometimes appear from the tape after opening boxes on the kitchen floor and every where else. It's flammable - so don't light a match around it though!

I ordered "Tokyo Story" from Amazon, and the copy they sent me has the coverart not set correctly in the digipak. The coverart sticks out of the plastic about 1/8" at the top. I was very careful with the sticker, and I managed to get it off without ruining the cover. How on earth do I push the cover back in? The plastic sheath is too tight for me to be able to push the art back in at all. I don't want to rip it. What do you all do with this?
I guess if I had a blank case, it would easily slide in there. But this won't slide at all.

Both Goo Gone and Lighter Fluid (the kind for refilling a lighter not the kind for lighting your barbeque) work equally well. Rubbing alcohol is good for cleaning discs and plastic cases that have a lot of dirt, fingerprints, smudges, etc., but not that effective for removing sticky residue left from tape or stickers. The "sticker rolling trick" advocated by others works only in certain situations. Some goo just can't be completely removed that way, and in any case it takes a lot longer then simply applying a few drops of Goo Gone or Lighter fluid to a rag and wiping the area once or twice (which is about all it ever takes with these two wonderful substances). The others are 100% correct: a bottle of Goo Gone or Lighter Fluid should be in any DVD collector's arsenal. I can't tell you how many of my CD and DVD cases they've saved.

there is a product that is specifically designed for removing glue from tapes, stickers, and dissolving the residue from spray adhesives. every frame shop on the planet keeps it on hand:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/product/47233/SEUQ/REG/839
that's just a random page i pulled up because it had a photo on it, but you could either look for it on the internet or just go to a local frame shop and ask them to order you a can. (a nice shop will likely order it for you at their cost, plus a couple bucks for shipping and time. usually less than $20 per quart.)
they use it to remove glue from diplomas and artwork (made for paper!) which has been badly mounted, so that should tell you that it is not going to do any damage, discoloration or spotting on your dvd case.
all you need to do is drip a bit on the sticker and allow it to soak through the paper surface, then lift an edge of the paper and peel it gently off. if there is any glue left on the box, just take a cotton ball or q-tip and rub the rest of the residue off. the chemical evaporates super quickly, so once done, your dvd case is left in dry, pristine condition.
i've seen a lot of threads mention this problem, so i just wanted to put this out there for you guys. having formerly worked in the art industry for 13 years, i forget that not everyone knows about some of the handy-dandy stuff they use in the business. this product is absolutely worth investing in a bottle, as you can use it on anything that needs sticky removed, and it lasts for years if you keep it stored tightly closed.
