Originally posted by Josh Z That's not true. Like Beauty and the Best, The Lion King underwent substantial re-animation in order to prepare it for Imax theaters. It's more than just the crocodiles or the "SEX". Almost the entire movie is infested with subtle and not-so-subtle animation differences. Here's another one: http://www.iconografica.com.mx/tlkwaterfall.jpg jeez, thanks Josh -ohbfrank- :p |
Disney probably used the new version because BatB looked like crap with the three versions on the same disc.
I noticed another change too. In the last shot of Circle of Life, they added some movement to baby Simba. It looks a lot better, the original shot looked like a still frame and I always hated it. |
Oh man. And they made Simba a Native American woman to be more politically correct.
DAMN YOU, DISNEY! DAMN YOU! |
So what about teh waterfalls, I mean, I didn't even notice it when watching through the film.... both times.

Originally posted by talemyn I realize that the IMAX release had substantial changes made to it to improve it's look in the IMAX presenation, but unless I am mistaken, the "Original Theatrical Release" on the DVD is not the IMAX version. Like Beauty and the Beast, the original animation is nowhere to be found on the DVD. This is standard operating procedure at Disney. They have a long history of tinkering with the animation on their old movies. When Pinocchio was re-released to theaters in the mid-90s they used a digital paint kit to recolor the whole movie, and then disavowed that there was any difference between the two. They did the same for other movies, including the Snow White DVD. |

The fact is that the "Original Theatrical Release" on the DVD has been changed and is not the original theatrical release. This is no different than George Lucas destroying all prints of the original Star Wars trilogy and insisting that the Special Edition versions with stupid new scenes and CGI special effects is the way he always intended the movies to be. |
Waterfalls... crocs... SEX... still don't care. No matter what Disney calls it.

This is one of my all time favorate movies and I would have never noticed the changes if it had not been for this thread. I think the crocs look better and match the overall tone of the move better.
I can't imagine how any of this affects the impact of the movie. Still a classic. I must say that animation forum had me rotfl! Also the transfer looked great and the new 5.1 mix sounded great as well. Definatly a demo disc. Can't wait to see it when I get my front projection system next year! I must say that the moring report song was not really that good and I doubt I will ever watch that version again. I really enjoyed the commentary track, the two directors are really entertaining and gave alot of insight into the process of makeing an animated feature. |
Why, in the first place, do they change things like this? Adding scenes in that were 'cut' or 'unfinished' is one thing, especially if they give the option to have it either way. But why totally reanimate certain scenes? Remastering is expected nowadays, although I wouldn't think TLK needs too much of it.
Those waterfall screenshots are not even close to looking like each other. |

I seriously doubt that they were trying to piss people off. |
you guys should enjoy the movie for what it is and stop nitpicking. They didn't change the overall movie. It's not irrelevant if I can't notice changes while watching the movie. If it's not going to effect me, what the hell is the problem :P

Originally posted by Josh Z You may not notice the changes, but that doesn't mean that no one else can. There are viewers who swear that they can't tell the Star Wars Special Editions from the original versions. Does that mean that nobody else has a right to complain? |

You do have a point with that one. I mean if you really could notice the difference before, without watching both Lion King VHS and DVD at the same time, then that's you. I did not see it, and I know a lot of people here didn't really see it either. But if you did, thumbs up to you, debate on! :D
