Is the release of the season one opener from Canada the same as the one from the box set?

Yes it is, except the first two episodes are separated and the 2nd episode includes a "previously on" clip.

Except for the dolby 5.1 for the canadian release. I dont understand why WB did not add 5.1 for the season set. Its still great but could have been better.
