"The Name Of the Rose" DVD?
I've searched high and low on websites and forums for information on this movie with very little success. There seem to be international versions out on DVD (including a Brazilian version and the Italian 2-disc special edition), but I have yet to hear anything in regards to any kind of U.S. release.
It's got so much potential for a great SE DVD . . . interviews with actors (Sean Connery, Christian Slater, Ron Perlman, F. Murray Abraham, . . .), great Director interviews/commentary (Jean-Jacques Annaud is the man!), possibilities for cool historical and literary tie-ins (anyone ever attempted to read the book?
), etc. Plus, it's just a great movie!!!
Anyone have any information? Rumors? Names of people to bribe?

I have both the Brazilian version and the 2-DVD Italian version.
If you're a literary nut -- and you can speak Italian -- the 2-DVD Italian version has an interview with Umberto Eco, who (it turns out) sounds just like Don Vito Corleone...

To the best of my knowledge, Name of the Rose was origionally held by Polygram and had a release date before they went under. The rights went to Warner Brothers. There was a chat with WB early this year when they let out some tidbits. They announced at the same time they were doing A Christmas Story SE finally in anamorphic and just came through with it, so Im sure WB will have their version of NotR coming soon. I keep a list of TBA streetdates under Word, and according to the chat, NotR was suppose to come out in November this year. Now A christmas story, according to the chat, should have come out a few months sooner. Possibly they may still release this by the end of the year, if not im sure at the beginning of 2004. I love this movie myself and have been looking foward to its arrival. I was mad when Polygram folded and some of their titles were canceled including NotR. Imagine if Polygram just held out for a few months longer, we would have the disc in our hands already and wouldnt be having this conversation. I beleive also that Platoon was a Polygram title and when that went out of print back in the day, it went for a pretty penny. Im sure NotR would be fetching alot of cash right now if it ever got released in the first place.
Anyway, Im sure its coming soon from WB so wait a little longer.

Dragonslayer and all... the comments of the people who bought the Italian R1 disc indicate that the audio and video quality leave much to be desired. Is that really the case?
Also, what is on the second DVD? Can't seem to find any details...

The Italian 2-DVD set is R0 PAL. The audio sounds fine to me.
The second disc is a full-length documentary about Medieval history, Eco's book, and the making of the film. The documentary contains interviews both with Eco and with those involved in the film adaptation.
I purchased mine from Dvdland.it; but you can usually find a few copies on eBay.

I'm beginning to be torn between waiting patiently for a US SE release and going for the Italian version.

I'm also waiting for a R1 release. Annaud rules, and my collection of his films is sorely incomplete without this masterpiece. If Fox can bang out a gorgeous bargain-priced edition of Quest for Fire with 2 commentaries and a few other extras, well then surely Warner can do the same for Name of the Rose.
