Goodfellas and Mean Streets SEs?
As I went through the thread that has a list of re-releases, I saw Goodfellas and Mean Streets. The date says it's coming out somewhere in November. Now is this confirmed or is it just a rumored date?

Please put a question mark after such a topic. You gave me great joy, followed by great sorrow, followed by great anger, followed by this yogurt.
Mmmm... Yogurt.

Don't know if you guys have seen this, but Manhola Dargis has some info in her column regarding SE's of Mean Streets and Goodfellas.
If you guys don't know who she is, she is a critic for the L.A. Times
Forgive me if this has been posted elsewhere already.
Here's what she wrote in her Q & A column on 9/12:
Reader's Question:
Secondly, do you have a good contact at Warner Bros.? For more than three years now they have been telling the "home forums" of various DVD Web sites that they are working on special editions of "GoodFellas" and "Mean Streets" - yet there is still no sign of either of them. (The current DVD editions of both films are mediocre.) Apparently the hold-up is getting Scorsese to do commentaries. It would be great if you could find out what is going on?
--Ian Smit, Cape Town, South Africa
Her answer:
Meanwhile, here is what a Warner Bros. Home Video spokesperson had to say about the forthcoming DVD editions of "Mean Streets" and "GoodFellas." "The two titles in question will be part of a new Scorsese collection which Warner Home Video is planning on releasing in the second part of next year; some third quarter, others fourth quarter, but all before the end of '04. They will be newly mastered special editions when released."
My reaction:
It's about damn time. They may be a long way off, but it will be worth the wait. Time to take Mean Streets off my to-buy list and put it on my Christmas list.

Gosh, this is gonna be a long freakin' wait. Ever since my first copy of Goodfellas got stolen, I haven't re-purchased it b/c of this new SE...this was June, 2002...second half of 2004 will be a great time is this Goodfellas news is indeed true.
Thanks for the update.

Damn all indications that WB gave in the last chat was that it was supposed to come out by November or so. The Martin Scorsese box set that is. I was hoping for a suprise announcement sometime late Septebmer or early November.

I wish I could still find all of the threads from 1999 about this. Back then, lots of people told me I was insane for buying Goodfellas. "It's a flipper!"; "The SE is coming out next [week, month, year, whatever]!"
4-5 years later and I think those people are still waiting around for this rumored SE. I'm sure it's coming someday, but until there is an official announcement, I wouldn't believe any rumors or anything you hear in a 'studio chat'. They've promised this one over and over and have yet to even hint at delivering.

When I read Martin Scorsese Box Set my first thought was the hope for a multi-studio set... Much like they did with Oliver Stone. Possibly get a SE of Casino and Raging Bull in there. We can only hope at this point.

David also asked about GoodFellas... I've indicated in the past some possible release dates only for those to be dropped. Well here is the latest: extra features have not yet been confirmed but a two-disc release looks likely for GoodFellas on 27th September, 2004. This will also be available to buy as part of a Scorsese boxset to include After Hours, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, and Who's That Knocking At My Door.
any similar news about this date?

Most of these are around in Region 2
Region 2 has released several Scorsese special editions that aren't available in the US, but none of them have commentary, so I think there's some credence to the idea that they're waiting for the commentary tracks:
- Mean Streets - German extras:
Wonderful visions on the way to the hell" Documentary (40 min.)
Interviews with Harvey Keitel and
Martin Scorsese
Slideshow
US Theatrical trailer
(disc one is a standard/widescreen flipper)
- Raging Bull - UK/Austrailian extras ("20th Anniv")
"The Bronx Bull" -documentary
Jake's Jokes - collection of La Motta's jokes
Easter Eggs - -Still gallery (Disc Two - press up to highlight the R of RAGING and press Enter)
-Rare Jake La Motta title fight footage (Disc Two - press up to highlight the 2nd G of RAGING and press Enter)
- Casino - French 3-disc [one disc is just the movie in French, one in English with French subtitles]
Documentary: "Martin Scorsese's work"
Documentary: "The real history which inspired the thread"
Theatrical trailer
even the Australian 'Kundun' has more extras than ours (though not the full length doc which was shot during the making of it).
I dunno, I'd rather, with movies like these, that they do them right; I'd rather not buy a bunch of lousy two discs and then have to buy a bunch of slightly better ones a year later when he records the commentary tracks. But they are out there (other than a 'Goodfellas' SE and 'After Hours' at all, at least).
