I don't do the website thing, guzzlefish, aficianado etc. I just don't see the point in it.

At home, I organize them by cases. I seem to be the only person that does this. Normal cases, special unique cases, snapper cases, box sets. etc. etc.

I change it up every now & then. Usually when I'm sick or can't sleep.
I was talking about the way we file them online, but I had my dvds arranged like you once. I just get bored by the way they look on my shelf, so I change it all the time. I inherited an old bookcase when I moved here, and the more discs I buy the less space I have to divide things up the way I'd like it. But I'd much rather spend money on more discs than on a new set of shelves. For now, it goes zombie movies, general horror/suspense, tv shows, music, everything else. As my collection grows, I will undoubtedly change it again.

I first split everything up on my DVDAf list because I was bored and hope to start trading stuff one day. It makes things easier to look through for someone who doesn't have physical access to your collection. I have my wish list split up for the same reason, for people who want to trade to see what I would like. It also helps me keep track of stuff to rent and what versions/region of whatever movie I'd like the most.

The wishlist thing just seems kind of pointless, something people do just for the sake that it's there & they can then post the link in their sig.
I can see how it doesn't make sense and every situation will be different. In my case, most of the gifts we receive are for my wife and myself, so nobody can ask either her or myself, and even though it could be exchanged, it's a hassle. Also, I had a list on DVDProfiler before I ever joined this site.

I buy DVDs WAY more than occasionally & my girlfriend buys them from time to time. But we have very different taste, so she will rarely buy something I would have & vice versa. Plus she keeps her DVDs seperate. And like I assume most people do, we don't go anywhere without are cell phones. If on the off chance she thinks she is buying a DVD I have, she just calls me. If for some crazy reason one does buy a DVD the other has, which hasn't happened yet. There is that crazy concept called the return I spoke of earlier. Are people really that dependant on a computer website to prevent all this from happening. I just don't get it.
My wife and I have almost the exact same tastes, and even though we also both have cell phones, I do most of my DVD buying from the web late at night (from CH, mostly) and I'm too lazy to go look at the collection and/or wake her up.

Same here, but I mean, do you have over 3,000 DVDs? If you do than I understand. I have over 300 & when people come over they look through them. You make it sounds like it takes hours upon hours, is it really that big a deal to have your dad say I'd like to watch X, Y, & Z ahead of time, does that really save that much precious time. And I'm in the same boat as you, we are the only ones that have a massive DVD collection & nice HT (actually my parents fo also) & that is all the more reason why family & friends like to look at our collection & choose a movie out.

It's not a matter of saving precious time necessarily (and I don't have that many DVD's - not quite 100 yet, but still have over 100 VHS also), it's due to the fact that when we have relatives over it's generally 6 - 10 people that are here for an extended time (3 - 14 days, depending). To me it's just easier if they don't all have to be rummaging through the actual DVD's (which are in hidden cabinets built into my entertainment center) and all saying "what do you want to watch?", but instead can already be looking forward to watching something.

Most do it, so clearly there must be something good about it. But for me, sitting down & plugging in 300+ DVDs into a website just seems kind of pointless, & a little weird to me. If I'm ever really sick one day, I may do it.

If I had 300 DVD's, it be hard for me to start an online site too. When I started mine at DVDProfiler, I only had 25 DVD's and it's now very easy to just add titles as I go. I will say, however, that I enjoy going through the alphabetical listings of DVD's they provide and looking for ones to add to my wishlist. I just started doing this last week, and I think I'm up to "G" now.

Contrary to the way my post might sound, I understand why you don't think it's something you would like, but I do think there's situations where it comes in handy.

try 900. it took me all day!! I agree that a wishlist online is pointless. I carry around a little black book, like Fonzi. I like to be able to share my tastes through a link to my collection. it has turned people on to a title in the past....as it has for me when I check out somebody elses link. aside from that...I just like having my collection list to go to...to help keep track of my growing library.

I didn't realize DVDAf let you create subfolders. Cool! I'm gonig to do that now.

At home, I have them alphabetical, but separate out kids' movies, music videos and TV shows.

BTW--to answer an earlier post, organizing them online is great for when you have friends coming over to watch movies, or borrow them. They can just check out your collection at their home so they don't spend hours drooling over your collection at your house.

i have mine in alphabetical order but wuth a little twist, i put sequels after the original one even if they don't have the same name, ex:

Evil Dead,The
Evil Dead II
Army Of Darkness

the next movie after that continues with the letter E

another example

Night Of The Living Dead
Dawn Of The Dead
Day Of The Dead

the next one after day is a movie that start with N

and box-sets are just on the shelf above the single DVDs.

Does this mean that you're not on a buying binge recently and already have most of the 300+ DVDs that you have on your "On Order" in possession but just haven't updated the list yet?

With only 200+ DVDs, I organized mine based on my own definition of the genres. On the shelves, the organization within the genre is basically random since there's not that many anyway (5 to 25).

A few months ago, I found that I'm running out of titles to get from CH and it helps to maintain a wish list folder for just the CH-able DVDs. Once I have 6 enrollments in it, the whole 23ea thing is kicked off. This way, my regular wish list contains those that I really need to work to find a good deal for.

I got about 20-25 DVDs, so I just put them in two different stacks...either comedy or action/adventure, thriller movies.

Makes it easy to choose depending on the mood

I organize mine according to studio. That way alll the snappers are the together AND you'll never imagine the satisfaction you get from seeing all those studio logos neatly lined up. It's like one giant boxed set!

I was just doing that for a very short time....just to play. all wants/needs are on a seperate list...written down in pencil. also...note that when you add a title to the collection that was on the order or wish list...it deletes it automatically. no need to update. I am going to start some folders though...need to make time. cant wait to see all the Blue Underground titles in 1 folder!!

Why is it pointless? When I am browsing around Amazon, and see something I want but not right now, I just add it to my wishlist right then and there. I try to keep it under 3 pages so it's not too annoying to go through, and make sure to include some cheap items (like paperback books) as well as some more expensive ones (I got my DVD player and my XBox because I put them on my list just for the heck of it.

Obviously, Amazon's not the cheapest, but they're not totally expensive and are fairly reliable. My family appreciates it because they know exactly what I want, I appreciate it because every year I get 15 or 20 DVDs that I've been meaning to buy but haven't gotten to yet, and avoid the hassle of returns (since my list gets updated as people buy things).

I also like other people's lists; some years, I've done about 95% of my shopping from my computer at home.

Ah, that's what I get for not reading carefully. I don't do my wish list in Profiler, etc, either. For me, that'd be...pointless, I guess.

BTW, the reason I have all three:

Profiler: I just like how it looks, plus it allows me to export to CSV, which makes it easy to track what I watch and when and what I thought of it. I also put all my prices paid in there, and where I got them, just for the heck of it (that goes in the spreadsheet too).

Afficianado: I like the categories, plus it's so easy to import into, why not use it (just copy and paste from my excel spreadsheet.

Guzzlefish: Mostly for the stats, but also for the music and video games.

Other reason I have all three is that if people do want to see what I have, they can pick their preference.

Once you get them set up, maintaining them is pretty easy, and adds one more fun thing (I find it fun, anyway) to do after you get the DVD.

same here. it's the first thing I do when I walk in the door. it feels like cheating if I add them before I can hold them. I like how you have all 3. I forgot just how sweet your collection is....we share similar taste and titles.

and here you see the posting the collection thing working. I forgot about Streets Of Fire...until I checked your links. now it's in that book I spoke of..thanks!!

I agree - ALPHABETICALLY is the only way to go! Of course some just aren't possible - like James Bond Boxed set, Bruce Lee Master Collection, Dirty Harry Boxed set and so on, so I have one shelf set aside for those kinds of boxed sets.

For any mac developers on the list, I am still waiting for someone to do a kickass Cocoa app for cataloging/tracking/etc DVDs.

Here is some of the information I would like to see tracked:

DVD Tracker/Cataloger - Title - Year - Director - Producer - Genre - Date Purchased
Price Purchased - Edition Designation - (Retail Price) - # of Discs - Video Format(s) (16:9) - Audio Formats(s) - Specialty Lables - MPAA Ratings - Cover Art
(Bar Code) - (Marquee Actors) - (IMDB Link to movie)

Here are some features I would like to see:

Ability to Group DVD's. Special options for Box Sets and TV Shows
Graphical and numerical representations of every applicable category listed above.
Purchase tracking, ability to see dvds boughty by day, week, month, year (all combinations, kinda like what quicken offers)
Ability to track dvd lending/renting (netlfix option).
Wish list/Pre-order list/Trade list
Watch list
Separate database for tracking vieiwing habits (what i watched on said day, how many watched per day/week/month/year etc).
Ability to export list to xml or html.

I am sure if I kept thinking about it I could come up with a lot more. I think there is a major opportunity in this area for a shareware developer to create a great (decently priced app) to do this.

I do mine on Guzzlefish as I do at home, Alphabetically but in these subfolders:

Movies (Used to seperate the 2 disc+ sets that are wider than normal, but added them all together recently)
Bond 007 movies
Music Videos/Concerts
Animated/Di$ney/TV Series(since most my TV shows on dvd are animated)

From: A little bit here and a little bit there.
My list is strictly alphabetical A-Z
I also keep a list of newly arrived stuff.

My collection itself is more complicated...

Mine is broken down into these categories.

1st- By director. At least by directors I like and have multiples of.
Each film is organized by the year it came out from that director. From earliest to latest from that director.

2nd- Broken down into genres and sub genres.
In alphabetical order

Comedy
Teen comedy
Teen drama
Drama
Action
Suspense/Thriller
Independent
Documentaries
Foreign
Music/Musicals/Dance
Television

(I don't have any animation/anime/porn)

Then I have My horror & cult films:

1st- Horror films a-z
2nd- Horror directors
argento, carpenter, etc.

Then cult & midnight movies A-Z

I will soon re-organize my horror films into sub-genres.

70's horror
Slashers
Supernatural/Ghost stories...etc

I will also separate the teen comedy section and break that down into decades. Teen comedy 70's, 80's, 90's
as well as teen dramas (which include teen action & sci-fi) into decades.

(I have 1,000+ titles on dvd)
