Are studios using subliminal advertising to sell catalog titles?

Recently, I've noticed that upcoming titles have been being played. Is this an attempt to advertising these titles subliminally?

For instance, the recent Coke commercial with the couple in the theater, watching Casablanca. Within a month that I saw that commercial, Casablanca 2 disc set was released.

And recently, Cinemax has been playing the hell out of Star Trek V, and the disc set is being released next month.

Subliminal? No, if it was you wouldn't know it. :)

Do they advertise the hell out of a DVD release? Yes, you have to get the word out somehow. Studios are also pushing the stars to mention the DVD of a movie they're in durring awards and such.

A few points:

1) If you see an title or something in the background, it's not subliminal.

2) There has never been a scientific study that shows that subliminal advertising (SA) works.

3) To the best of my knowledge, there is no company that currently does SA, because of 2, and if they get caught, there would be a huge stink that would hurt sale.

As to your question, do they purposely show upcoming DVDs in the background, heck yea!

I would think playing the hell out of Star Trek V would make more people not want to buy the movie.

I notice a lot movies that had a recent dvd release being played on cable, but I probably only notice them because they were just released. There are hundreds of others being played that I don't pay attention to.

Product placement at it's finest. for examples see American Idol. I can't count the times I hear the plug bell.

No. {hot sex} I see no reason for studios to do this. {Jim Carrey is funny} People can decide for themselves what is entertaining. {The Matrix rulz!} I think we're just be paranoid. {hot sex}

So, bboisvert...how YOU doin'? :eyebrow:

I prefer the Superliminal advertising.

"Hey you! Buy this DVD!"

I think movies on TV stop me from buying the DVD.

NL's Vacation, on Comedy Central right before the new DVD just came out...

Fletch Lives, on ABC Family (i think) the night before the DVD came out.

Was the Breakfast Club or one of those on TV last weekend too?

Yeah...what the hell is up with that...I've seen PPV advertise Chicago and Two Towers and what do you know? They have just recently come out on DVD!

Josh-da-man 09-05-03 03:15 PM

It was much better than "Cats."

It seems, when a studio re-masters older movies for DVD, they also offer the transfers to networks for airing.

I certainly hope that subliminal advertising is being used to sell catalog titles . The more catalog title sales there are the more likely that more catalog titles will be released. I don't buy 99.9999999999999% of the new theatrical releases just from their run in the theatre because 99.9999999999999% of it is manure IMHO.

One person's trash maybe another person's treasure.

I would like the studios to release as many movies on DVD as possible. Even if I dislike the movie, someone else maybe waiting for it.

mikewendt 09-05-03 07:36 PM

It's definatly not subliminal. It's point blank in your face advertising.

Who cares what anyone else likes? I want to buy only the films I like. And I would REALLY like the Blade Runner 3-disc to come out NOW. http://www.stopstart.freeserve.co.uk/smilie/shocker.gif
