What are your DVD "pet peeves"?
I'm sure this'll get interesting...
Mine is owning DVDs I will never watch/enjoy again. And this gets pretty crazy. Whether the movie sucks or I've absolutely killed it and know every line (Spaceballs, Office Space) it goes to eBay. Besides, it lets me get new DVDs for virtually nothing. Still, I currently own about 20 DVDs, and have probably owned around 80 all together. Shows you just how picky I am :D |
DVDs without inserts
Snapper Cases DVDs without Scene Selections (Damn you Lynch!) DVDs availably only in full frame Double-no wait triple-dipping |
My only real pet peeve is having wonderful features like skip, repeat, menu, etc disabled by the DVD.. so dumb.
|
that if I buy less than 5 dvds a week....I suffer a withdrawl type sickness.
pressing plants are still bent over...with heads buried in ass. little or no quality control and response from those in charge. other than that....no complaints. |
FBI warning at the beginning of the dvd.
FOX we are not responsible for what is said in the commentaries Extremely long animated menus DVDs with confusing menus like the Bad Boys menu that has you click on symbols like I"m supposed to know what symbol means play. |
snappers.
|
Forced trailers at the beginning of the movie that can't be skipped with a press of the menu button or the chapter skip button.
|
When I don't have time to watch the DVDs.

Snappers
DVD's that won't let you switch audio tracks during the film. Animated films that fill up a third of the disk with games for the kids. Really expensive tv box sets and anime. The overabundance of 'floating head' cover art. |
* Confusing menus where you can't tell what option you have selected.
* Extra features hidden as easter eggs [an EE should, imho, be a bonus, but part of the draw of DVD is the features.] * Lack of English subtitles. Some things have captions instead, which are better than nothing, but I prefer subs. * Unwarranted and un-advertised doubledipping [ie, I can see one where the original DVD came out five years ago, and they've added extras, cleaned up the sound/video, etc.] * Bad cases [where you feel like you're going to break the disk by pulling it out.] * 'Cinepak' cases [I think that's what they're called, what the Simpsons and Mary Tyler Moore disks are in.] * Snappers, especially ones that don't snap. * Disks that have the title/side info in teeny tiny mice print around the hole in the disk [Outer Limits S1; I know why they did it, but it's still a pain.] * Pirated/bootleg/HK versions of DVD's or anime that are available for 1/20th the cost, and me wanting to be legit and not support those scumbags. |
wait, whats the diff. between captions and subtitles.
|
Seeing all of Rob Schneider's films on DVD except the only one I want, Up Periscope.
Pan 'n Scam versions only of some of my favorite films. Catalogue titles not being released while crappy films are. Very few free DVD deals any more. Long animated menus. Snappers. |
- Confusing menus
- Menus with loud/annoying music playing on them - Unskippable ads/trailers - Buying a DVD online and having it be loose in the case - Having a "documentary" be a 4 minute fluff piece about how super everyone is! - Discs that don't stay on their spindles I have more, but those are the less neurotic ones :) |
1. LONG menus that you can't skip through
2. Panned and Scanned DVDs of widescreen movies 3. Cropped false widescreen versions of 1980's TV movies and mini-series 4. over matted movies 5. flat 2-D only versions of 3-D movies 6. movies that claim to uncut on the packaging but aren't |
Originally posted by atari2600 wait, whats the diff. between captions and subtitles. Subtitles are programmed onto the dvd itself, and are managed by the DVD player. They can be different colors, different sizes, down in the 'black bar' part of a letterbox dvd, and I think some DVD players even allow you to move where the subs are located. They both serve the same purpose, but do it in different ways. The spindle thing bugs me, too--I hate buying a disk [or rec'ing it in the mail] and having it rattle. I've never actually had a disk be damaged however [except for one from Netflix that was shattered all to heck.] |
Damn, some people here got some real issues with these DVDs... :)

Forced trailers.
Long, dumb, unskippable menus. Snappers. Incorrect aspect ratios (yeah, this means you, Fool Screen) and the worst thing... When the DVD is WS on one side and FS on the other, but the special features are split up between the discs (ala Reservoir Dogs). Ugh. |
DVDs which have disabled the last Memo feature on my dvd player
Menus which take too long to do their thing flimsey cases dvds without rude/nude deleted scenes on them (you can't tell me there aren't some raunchy Lion King deleted scenes somewhere!) |
- poorly placed layer changes
- impractical / poorly designed disc hubs - snapper cases - noisy animated menus - security stickers/especially ones that leave residue behind - discs that disable player functions - extras that don't allow you to play all at once |
1. Trailers for other movies *before* your movie starts. Yes, I can skip forward, but it still bugs me. Disney and Fox, I'm looking at you!
2. Those infernal FBI warnings and studio disclaimers that won't let you skip forward. 3. Easter eggs. They were cute at first but the idea is old now. We're all adults here, just put them neatly in the "Special Features" section where we can access them without punching in the square-root of Pi while the menu title is aqua-marine the eighth time around. |
MGM owning distribution rights to the classic movies I want to buy.
Otherwise respectable studios expecting flawed products (Giant, Chaplin Collection, Godfather Trilogy) to remain definitive editions. Digipaks, snappers, thin dual-disc sets (i.e. Dances With Wolves, Spirited Away). But most of all is, perhaps...web content. There is no excuse for this bull. I don't own very many DVDs with web content, but this has to be the worst possible thing you can do to someone. Sure, the others are true terrors...but "web content" irks me in ways beyond reasonable explanation. |
Playback defects on widely advertised mainstream releases: See the Chapter 51 glitch on "The Lord of the Rings:The Two Towers" DVD as an example.
GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!! |
Ditto on forced trailers. It's getting more and more common lately, too.
