Re: How Many of the 109 BEST Films Do You Own on R1 DVD?
I have these 11
1. Citizen Kane (Welles/1941/Warner)
7. The Godfather Part II (Coppola/1974/Paramount)
8. Seven Samurai (Kurosawa/1954/Criterion)
14. Lawrence of Arabia (Lean/1962/Columbia TriStar)
15. The Godfather (Coppola/1972/Paramount)
43. Casablanca (Curtiz/1942/Warner)
43. Third Man (Reed/1949/Criterion)
55. North by Northwest (Hitchcock/1959/Warner)
65. Rear Window (Hitchcock/1954/Universal)
95. His Girl Friday (Hawks/1940/Columbia TriStar)
95. Notorious (Hitchcock/1946/Criterion/Anchor Bay OOP)
I suppose the list means something to me since I took the time to actually list those titles which I own. Besides that, the list means absolutely nothing to me because I decide what is a great movie. In fact, the way I would rank these would be somewhat reversed. Then again, I'm not a "Film Scholar."

Some Like It Hot
The Wizard of Oz

I do like "crappy" movies (horror, sci-fi, indie, etc.), but I would have probably five or six more of them if my girlfriend hadn't insisted that she buy them for her collection (It's a Wonderful Life, Psycho, North by Northwest and Rear Window are the ones that come to mind). Although we live together (for five years), we keep our DVDs separate.

Used to have Psycho, To Kill A Mockingbird, Taxi Driver and City Lights but they were all sold off when I was tight for cash. Will probably pick up the first two again, and eventually City Lights (along some other Chaplin titles, some of which are on the list) when it gets its much-deserved 2-disc treatment. I wish it came with the first wave like it was supposed to. Then again, I might not have gotten $55 for the OOP disc then.

Pfft! Whatever - there are some films that have no business being within a hundred miles of a 'best of' list. And some obivous exclusions that need to be here. But, what the hell - I'll play along:
In my collection, you'll find:
Citizen Kane
Vertigo
2001: A Space Odyssey
Seven Samurai
Rashomon
Battleship Potemkin The Public Domain version from Total Movie.
Lawrence of Arabia
Psycho
The General Again - the total movie boxed set.
Casablanca
Metropolis
North by Northwest Have it on LD, havent upgraded.
Rear Window

Not a list of movies that I care for especially since Clockwork Orange is one of the choices. Proud to only own two of those.
64. The Wizard of Oz (Fleming/1939/Warner)
65. Pulp Fiction (Tarantino/1994/Miramax)

And while this is one "Best Films" poll I respect (unlike similar surveys done here in the U.S., the voters in the S&S poll actually have some knowledge of film history...plus, their names and choices are made public,) I won't buy a DVD for a film I don't like just because it's on this list... but, then again, I might give a film I haven't seen a look because it is on the S&S list.

I own 7 with a couple more on my wish list. Lists like this whether it's AFI or Sight and Sound aren't all that meaningful for me in terms of what to buy. I'll check out lists like this and rent one or two that I haven't seen or heard of before but that's really the extent of their usefulness.
