The Commitments - Full Screen or Letterboxed?
Amazon has The Commitments listed as "Full Screen - 1.33:1", but DeepDiscountDVD has it as "Letterboxed - 1.85." Does anyone know which is right?

I was astounded that after waiting so long to re-release this great film, they gave us the same lousy version as the old release.
I was waiting to see what this "new" one would be like, but now I guess it's time to seek out one of the ones from Europe. I think there's a good German or French one, in English with removable subs. Thank goodness for all-region players.
The only good thing about this re-release is that it kills the ebay market for the out of print version.

I've been wanting to buy this on DVD ever since buying my DVD player, and kept hoping for some rerelease that I would actually be worth buying. I was thrilled to hear about this rerelease, but I guess that was unwarranted excitement. Those European versions definitely sound tempting now.
I can't believe "pan and scan" is listed as a bonus feature.

Like everyone else on this thread, I was excited to learn that 20th Century Fox was going to re-release "The Commitments." I've put off buying the prior release beacause it was in "full frame" format. It's never made sense to me why Fox chose not to put a widescreen version of the film on the disc, since it's available in Europe apparently and there were no other extras to speak of, so there should be plenty of room. I'm stunned that the re-release is a "pan and scan" version.
Fox ought to re-mix the soundtrack, add Dolby Digital or DTS and release it in a widescreen special edition. Perhaps we should start a petition...?

Luckily, I had sold my old one (same as the new one) for about $50 a few months ago, so that will pay for one of the better ones from another region.
I honestly think that Fox lost a lot of potential sales by re-releasing this version. Well, one for sure.

re-releasing it in full screen again is one thing. But how did this mix up occur? Who been planting it that it will be in widescreen all these months? Was it officially announced by the studio or some dvd site?
If it was the studio, then there's plenty of blame to go around!!
If it was a rumor, then shame on us.

FOX stores had it as a widescreen up until the other day. I wrote them and they apologized, then promptly changed the specs.
Sigh. I went ahead and bought the Dutch edition...
