I'll have my review of this disc up this weekend (along with an interview with Singleton. The disc set is great, but you'll have to wait for my review to know why.

Okay, well, here's a hint: the image is sharp, the documentary is great, and the commentary is entertaining.

Does anyone know if it is the same commentary that was on the Criterion LD?

Looking forward to this - it's a powerful movie that hopefully will now find an even wider audience.

Whatever happened to that kid that starred in it? He could've been great Same goes for the director. Must suck to peak so early.

The transfer is new, but sadly, this disc only features a 2.0 track.

The Commentary is new (as of a few years ago). In other words, it's not the same as the Criterion release.
.................................................................................................

Singleton, the director, has filmed 7 movies, including 2 Fast 2 Furious and the new Shaft with Sam Jackson.

Cuba Gooding, Jr., who starred in it, won an oscar for his role in Jerry Maquire.

Ice Cube and Laurence Fishburne are also in the film.

Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of the old version. I'll see what I can do for a comparison. As for the quality of the image, it looked sharp, but the first time through, I listened to the commentary, so I focused on words instead of image. I'll go through it again tonight with a closer eye to detail. Plus, my review should be posted in the next 48 hours.

Don't forget Morris Chestnut!

By the way, the title is Boyz N The Hood...I figured that somebody who's seen the movie 20 times would at least get the title right.

I have the original disc too, and didn't even realize it was getting another release. I'm sure Singleton's commentary will be good.

bhome83,

Unfortunately, it is not being carried by CH at this time. (I have noticed the same with Columbia's other two disc set, The People vs. Larry Flynt.) Quite possibly they will allow their current stock of the original run dry before getting the new version.

If it is, I will buy it. If not, I will hold on to original version.

Yeah, they hadn't added it to the database when I made that post on 8-22. I did find one review stating it is the same transfer. Considering it contains and Pan and Scan and widescreen on the same side, I'm sure it is.
