buffy sets are messed up?
so far i have watched all 3 season 1 dvds and the first ep of season 2 and on all disks and all episodes i notice the exact same thing.
during certain scene transitions there is a annoying "flash" that occurs. when i pause it at the "flash" i can see that the previous scene and the new scene are intermixed. like all the odd horizontal lines will be one scene and all even the other. this doesn't happen at every single scene change but still a lot of them, more than half even seems. and also, it happens on every episode i have seen so far.
this occurs on my sony dvd player and also in powerdvd xp 5.0 for my pc. what is going on? were all the seasons authored incorrectly? i also have season 3 and 4 but haven't watched those yet.

I haven't noticed this and I own and have watched all 4 seasons available. Now, however, I probably will notice it.
Thanks a lot.
I'll check out a couple episodes later and see if I notice anything.

well i think it's pretty noticeable so if you didn't notice it already then maybe i have something setup wrong?
maybe it's that force bob or weave option in powerdvd? for my sony dvd player i think it's called film and movie mode. i didn't try that yet, but i tried enabling/diabling progression scan and that made no difference.
update:
when i use auto or weave in powerdvd 5 i see the weird lines, when i use bob they go away, so i guess that was the problem. i don't think my dvd player has this setting though. my rptv has a film/video setting but that doesn't help.

To me it just sounds like the DVDs were converted from 24fps to 30fps and as a result are interlaced (i.e. an extra 6 frames per second were created by mixing together the odd horizontal lines from one frame and the even horizontallines from another frame), and it just so happens that some of the interlaced frames fall on scene transitions. My knowledge of this technical stuff is quite limited though, so I could well be wrong.

Mine do this, too.
I don't notice a flash, but on my Toshi player, when I pause on certain frames, it looks like two frames are fighting to appear at the same time, especially when there's a lot of movement. Even on pause (still frame) the picture flickers. Then, when I ZOOM in on the pic at that point, it doesn't flicker, but there are lots of horizontal lines running through the image. It looks worst during the credit sequences with all of the fast motion and quick cuts.
I have several discs that do this. It's only sort of noticeable when I'm pausing or frame-advancing.
I'm thinking this has something to do with the source materials, maybe that it was shot on film and edited on video or something.

Once again... my knowledge on the technical side is a bit lacking. I have a general idea though

The problem is that the discs are incorrectly flagged for the proper method of deinterlacing to watch on a progressive scan display. If you use a flag-reading DVD player or software, you get these combing artifacts. If you use a cadence-based deinterlacer (such as a DVD player with the Faroudja DCDi chip) the problem will be lessened or eliminated.
Here is a link with a full explanation of how progressive scan works:

i found the settings on my dvd player to change it from auto-detect to either film (weave) or video (bob) but it didn't seem to fix it, neither did disabling progressive scan.
i forgot to mention there is another problem with these sets. has anyone noticed that in every single episode there are slow downs at certain parts? it happens like 3 times per ep. all the sudden things will go a little slower than normal speed.
i read the reviews of these sets and no one ever mentions the interlacing or slow down problems. also, episode 2 on season 2 is the grainiest speckled dvd video i have ever seen in my life. what is up with fox.

rubix on a poor deinterlacing dvd pplayer you will notice the problems you are describing. I bought a Bravo D1 to compare against my RP82 and noticed what you are seeing when using the Bravo. On the Panny absolutely no probs.
