How are they selling the "best of sexy movie moments" on DVD?
I saw a commercial on tv for two dvds of clips of sex scenes from various main stream movies. How are they allowed to do this?

They most likely get a license from all the individual copyright owners to use the scenes in compilation form. I'd think it would be no different than your standard compilation CD.
If they didn't, the studios (who are usually the copyright owners) would definitely have squashed this DVD by now.

Nothing too bad at the link... but it could be considered Mature. (i.e. -- don't click this at work in full view of others)

I seem to recall hearing/reading a Reese Witherspoon interview where she was angry about this, considering suing, blah blah.

Hey, aslong as the copyright owners are getting a piece of the pie, they are happy. that's how this works. Did you ever get those old compliation tapes? I had one with the best of horror scenes. this also works the same for that DVD that had the best fight scenes with clips from fight club and other films.

Well, there seems to be a pretty major difference in those two compilations:
BOOGEYMEN -- great advertisement for horror films. Studios are enouraged to license clips to increase sales of actual discs.
HOLLYWOOD'S HOTTEST -- treat major stars like slabs of meat. Encourage some of your most expensive talent to refuse to do certain scenes and enact 'no nudity' clauses.
Doesn't seem like there's much incentive for a studio to license out those clips.

Last night on "Celebrity Justice" there was a segment about this DVD. The company selling it is being sued by the studios for copyright infringement.

I think it's ignorant, from a commercial standpoint. Who wants to buy a movie that is just "best of sexy moments" or "best of kills" and sit and watch that for the complete running time?

Even stars who do nudity often have strict control clauses put into their contracts. So all re-use must be run by them first for approval. For example, if a star shoots a nude scene that is later cut from the movie, he/she can refuse to allow that scene to appear as a deleted scene on the DVD.
I find it VERY hard to believe that the makers of this DVD got all of the proper authorizations in advance.

Noted above, but I just saw this in Entertainment Weekly:

'HOLLYWOOD'S HOTTEST'
The video series, which airs nude scenes featuring the likes of Nicole Kidman and Halle Berry, is being sued for copyright infringement and $6 million in damages by five movie studios.

meg ryan on top and linda hamilton on the bottom! booyah! I too was shocked as hell when I saw the ad. Watching tv at 3 in the morning can be a real blast sometimes.
I also like how the show was marketed towards the "nudity" one, yet the "sex" one was just "call in the next 10 minutes..."
