Packaging aside..(not a really big fan of this 'gimmicky' type marketing)...me too!!

The 2-disc version is only $18 at DDD. Can't really complain about the price. Final Countdown will be their most popular release yet, so it's not a big surprise that they're offering multiple versions. After all, BU got its roots from Anchor Bay.

EPKJ 01-08-04 02:13 PM

I will buy the two disc set, though not for the lenticular cover.

The Exister 01-08-04 03:59 PM

Yeah, I'd be willing to pay $18.00 for the single disc version, so I've got no problem with the existence of a 2-disc version!

gutwrencher 01-08-04 04:27 PM

this sounds cool, too!!

update from the bits:

"The Zero Pilot Journal is actually a 4,000 word diary written by the CAF (Confederate Air Force) detailing the Zero pilots' experience filming the dogfight scenes with the F-14s, from the difficulties just flying down to Key West, to filming the flight scenes with the Tomcats. It turns out that it was an extremely difficult and dangerous task. The article was written in 1979 before the movie was released and has been essentially lost since. I cannot stress enough how detailed this article is. It is a complete documentary, just in words rather than video. I guarantee if you love the Final Countdown movie, you will love this article and find it extremely educational."

Very true but I think they have done a lot of things very well to date. Not a single BU release that I am not happy with and think I have most of them.

EPKJ 01-09-04 07:02 AM

I disagree. I do not believe that Final Countdown will be their most popular release. I don't think the film has that big a following. Most people don't even remember it.

I wish Blue Underground would update their website. I am still looking for an announcement about replacement boxes for The Mondo Cane Collection.

Yes..strange there hasn't been an announcement as such.
According to various sources and responses i have received by e-mail myself, they are looking to get replacement boxes out by Feb.1 according to Lissa Beltri (BU)

That is the same information I have received, but, I won't feel satisfied until I see it posted on their site.

I'd say that of all the titles on BU....this will "cross the lines" as much or more than any other of their titles. I dont have any figures, but I'll bet Dead and Buried was a good seller as well. for many people, TFC will be their first BU purchase. most of the other titles require a certain taste and open-mindedness, while TFC is one of their more mainstream releases. more people than you think might have seen this flick. any other time it's been released it has recieved crappy promoting and shitty presentation. the word will spread of this title and of the dvd. I hope. I say it's going to surprise many people and sell many copies.

I really doubt that Final Countdown will have much more demand than Dead & Buried or Q The Winged Serpent.

cool...I'm just sayin'. I remember when TFC came through on it's theatrical run. it seemed to attract a pretty decent following. many of us sci-fi fans grew up with this. I cant remember D&B or Q even hitting the local theaters here. I could be wrong...but I was a horror fan then so ya think I'd remeber. gettin' to old.

regardless...I'm sure that this disc...for us fans....will be top-notch!!

I think you might be very surprised. Dont get me wrong I love BU product but this title as gutwrencher has said is much more mainstream then their offerings to date and for that reason alone I have no doubt will be their largest seller. You will have the large chains snapping this title up to carry whereas most of the other BU catalogue would not even be considered. Would be interesting to know either way and if does sell as well as I expect I would not be surprised to hear BU say so in Press Release or similar.

Based on IMDB.com interest and ratings:

Dead & Buried - 375 votes 5.6 out of 10 (point system)

Q, The Winged Serpent - 400 votes 5.9 out of 10

The Final Countdown - 1,802 votes 6.5 out of 10

gutwrencher 01-09-04 11:25 PM

another fun result is even though some will not find the special cover edition worth the extra $....many who are unfamiliar with the film will pick it up off the shelf and play with it for a few seconds...then toss it in the basket. it's cool when other people discover a gem they never knew existed. you know it will happen. soon, they too will learn of BU and maybe seek out other titles. this will be a huge exposure title for BU.

here I'm drooling over this and I'm about to burst just thinking about the 2 Franco titles coming later this month. 2 titles that will for sure slip through the cracks.

There will definitely be more demand for The Final Countdown and apparently, BU thinks so as well. As was stated earlier, Final Countdown has a larger mainstream audience then any other of BU's titles. I know I've seen it played numerous times as a weekend afternoon movie on TV which can't be said for the majority of the other titles released by BU. I hope all goes well for BU with this release, so we can continue to get great dvds from them.

And I think you're way, way off the mark. The Final Countdown is a much more well-known film than anything else BU has released so far (except perhaps Mondo Cane). Big evidence of this is that whenever the BU release of TFC comes up on HTF, a large number of people post asking who BU is, as they've never even heard of the company before. This release will, without question, attract a whole new slew of customers who have never bought a single BU release before.

If Pacific Family Home Entertainment had released crappy DVDs of Dead & Buried or Q, do you really think we'd have endless threads discussing the legality of the discs, their quality, etc.? There's no way. Barely-known horror films have similar DVD releases all the time, and no one bats on eyelash on this forum. Brentwood even released a crappy LD-sourced bootleg of God Told Me To, and how many threads did we get here complaining about the release? None. I count at least 8 threads since 9/02 discussing PFE's release of TFC and seeking alternatives. Brentwood's God Told Me To, on the other hand, garnered a single post in the same time period, and it wasn't even a complaint.

The bottom line is that TFC's recognition among DVD purchasers blows films like Dead & Bured and Q out of the water. If you don't think so, you've got an awfully skewed view of the film's popularlity.

TomOpus 01-10-04 09:46 AM

I liken this release to Criterion's release of Armageddon and The Rock. It doesn't really fit in with the catalog but will probably be the first BU purchase for many people. As others have said, the exposure for the company will be a big boost

...hopefully :)

Have been eager to hear of what plans BU have in way of their Argento releases this year and hopefully FFOGV is the first of many more.

Well, we shall see. I think that Final Countdown is actually a fairly obscure film. It is a genre film and not mainstream at all. Still, I will buy it and am glad Blue Underground is releasing it.

Well, until this is sourced in a verifiable manner, this is an unsubstantiated rumor and unworthy of further discussion.

It was said in front of a big crowd by Bill Lustig at the Fangoria/Chiller Theatre Convention this past weekend. It is now being discussed by just about every horror board on the net. Pick any one at random to read multiple reports on it from people who attended. Is that "worthy" enough for you?

actually, this was stated over at Mobius...a very well repected forum with members such as Video Watchdog's Tim Lucas. it appears that Lustig made the announcement himself. I dont doubt this news one bit.

First, gutwrencher did supply any of that information. Second, I am reading this forum, not another. Third, no, it is not enough. Is there a link to this information?
You are just repeating what you read somewhere else. That is called an unsubstantiated rumor. It may be true, but until a verifiable source is provided, it will remain unworthy of discussion.

gutwrencher 01-12-04 05:23 PM

I didnt mention the source because I had only heard that through a friend who had read it at Mobious. I didnt want to mention the source until I read it myself. I did however trust his info 100%...which is why I brought it to you. everyone hear knows I'm one of the biggest BU supporters around(own it all) and would never just shoot my mouth off about something I'm such a fan of...unless I was damn sure.:D

since I just wrapped up a 12 hour day....I just got home. sorry for the delay.

Please cut the wannabe moderator crap. While you whine about what's is and isn't "worthy of discussion," the rest of us would like the actually discuss what's going on out there in the real world. Even if this information wasn't verified, there's no rule at this forum that rumors can't be discussed, so please stop trying to invent new rules of your own.

Since prior to this post you provided no sources, no one knew what you were talking about. That was the problem. Now you have provided a source. You should have done so to begin with. Finally, I never said that you could not discuss the matter. I said that it was unworthy of discussion. This has nothing to do with attempting to moderate anything. It was a statement of fact. Unsubstantiated rumors are a waste of time. You should observe gutwrencher. He understood my problem and attempted to satisfy my questions in a civil manner. I responded in kind.

The following is quoted from Vincent in that Mobius thread:

I missed the actual Blue Underground panel, but was told just yesterday by somebody who's closely affilitated with Blue Underground that BU was "working" on getting the rights to 4 FLIES and had some promising leads, but it was far from definite as of yet... Can anybody clarify? At FangoCon 1999, Bill Lustig announced that he had aquired EL TOPO for Anchor Bay*, and we all know what happened with that (i.e., nothing)- did Lustig/BU actually flat-out say that they had the rights/elements for 4 FLIES ON GREY VELVET and it was a definite upcoming release, or was it more of a "We're looking into it" type deal?

Vincent

* This is not heresay or second-hand info, I was there for that panel when Lustig flat-out told the crowd that he had the rights to EL TOPO and would be doing it with Anchor Bay.

Modified by Vincent at Mon, Jan 12, 2004, 00:31:45
Obviously the people in that thread share my desire to have verifiable sources. Was Vincent attempting to be a moderator? No, he was requesting sourcing as was I.
