First 12 episodes? I was under the impression that this was going to be additional episodes not already released.
Or are they releasing two sets, with this being a double dip?

The set is 4 discs ...each disc containing 3 eps of BOTP and 3 eps of their Gatchaman counter-parts. So, 12 episodes in all, but more like 24 if you count both series as "separate" so to speak. And as far as I know, these are the NEXT 12 episodes in the series, not just a rehash of the eps on the 6 volumes Rhino has already released.

Wow - this was my favorite show as a kid. Then I saw an episode a couple years ago and realized how awful it is. It's scary what a few years of maturity will do to your childhood memories.

I had read a rumor that Cartoon Network was going to redub the original, uncut Gatchaman episodes and air them during "Adult Swim." Does anyone know if there is any validity to that?
I have been interested in seeing these for a long time, going so far as to look into the old Japanese LD sets that had every episode of all the incarnations of the show, and I'd much rather see them in their original form. If this is true I won't waste my money. The BOTP edits cut out so much, and even the G-Force version left a lot out.

If what you mean is that one of the big US anime distributors (ADV, Pioneer, Bandai, etc.) is going to have Gatchaman redubbed, and CN are going to show it... then still no, because Rhino have the home video rights, remember?

The 1970s animated series Battle of the Planets, following the adventures of five teens known as G-Force, is being revived by US and Canadian producers as a series of eight new 2D animated movies and a 24x30' television series.
New York-based Sandy Frank Entertainment and Canada's Ocean Productions are teaming up to breathe new life into the classic show, originally a Western adaptation of the anime series Gatchaman from Japanese studio Tatsunoko.
"We're lining up the show for a Mipcom launch this October," SFE's evp Phil Oldham told C21. "When we did the original show 25 years ago we signed with Turner Broadcasting for the US and Hearst for international, so we have to wait until those contract expire this September before we can put it on TV anywhere."
However, since the home video market didn't yet exist when those deals were signed, he added, those rights were retained by SFE. Consequently, the company has already signed home video deals with Rhino for the US, Universal for the UK and is in talks with Universal for France.
Oldham added that he was also in talks with a French outfit to come onboard as a coproduction partner for the series. The toon follows five teenagers and a droid who transform into superheroes and regularly save the world from intergalactic evil.
Oldham added that he's flying to the UK next week to pitch the show to British networks. The original show (aka G-Force) previously aired on ITV in the UK.

Can't find anything newer on this topic than February 2003. Don't know if it's still being worked on.

I don't think too much has been done with this, but from what I've heard, it's still alive. They're going to use the BOTP character names and combine it with the Gatchaman storyline. They will NOT be adding 7-Zark-7 or any of that crap.

Does anyone have confirmation that this September 9 release ULTIMATE box set will contain the FIRST twelve episodes of BOTP/Gatchaman as opposed to the NEXT (or SECOND) twelve episodes? None of the DVD e-tailers (DVDEmpire, DVDPlanet, Amazon, AnimatedBliss) provide a list of the episodes contained on the discs. In fact, AnimatedBliss only states "12 BOTP episodes and 12 completely UNCUT and UNEDITED episodes of Gatchaman on 4 discs!" There's no mention that the 12 episodes are the FIRST twelve that have already been released as Vol. 1-6.
When I spoke to a Rhino Video representative at the San Diego Comic-Con in mid-July, he assured me that this box-set would contain episodes #13-24.
Can anyone provide a press release that definitively states which episodes will be found on this box set?

I was psyched to see the title only to see many crapping on the show. I haven't seen it in years...is it really that bad? This was my fave cartoon until Voltron came around.
My 6-year old stepson hasn't ever seen Voltron, but he totally digs it based on the lions alone....I guess I'll pass on BOTP and wait for the Voltron DVD (if they ever get here).

Okay, the very last page of the latest issue of the "Battle of the Planets" comic book (#12---released today by Top Cow Productions) is a Rhino Home Video advertisement promoting the September 9 Battle of the Planets DVD Box set.
The ad states, "a Brand new 4-disc collection with 12 *NEVER BEFORE AVAILABLE* Battle of the Planets Episodes." So at least we definitely know now that Rhino isn't just re-packaging the episodes in Vol. 1-6.
The listed "amazing" extra features are:
*12 Original Uncut Gatchaman Episodes (with English subtitles)
*Commentary with Janet Waldo, Alan Young and Ronnie Schell
*Exclusive Interviews with Casey Kasem, Alan Young, Ronnie Schell, Janet Waldo and Jameson Brewer
*Promotional Trailer
*Memorobilia Gallery
*Cast and Crew Bios

Ok so it looks like the the NEXT 12 episodes of BOTP. What about Gatchaman, is it 100% confirmed that it's the NEXT 12 for those also? The above ad doesn't say for certain At these prices it pays to be sure.
By the way how is issue 12? I'll be picking it up this weekend.

You know, that's an excellent question. I would have assumed this box set's Gatchaman episodes would correspond exactly to the BOTP episodes, BUT Sandy Frank Productions didn't adapt Gatchaman episodes #13, 19 or 20 (among others) into BOTP episodes back in 1978. (There are 85 original BOTP episodes and 105 original Gatchaman episodes.) I would IMAGINE that Rhino Video placed Gatchaman episodes #13-24 in this box set, but I don't know for sure.
(BTW, An excellent BOTP/Gatchaman website is

To be honest, I didn't read it yet. Once I bought it, I immediately turned to the back of the issue to see if there was an announcement about the next BOTP comic series. (#12 ends this volume.) That's how I saw the Rhino Video ad.

Would they really just release 12 RANDOMLY selected episodes of Gatchaman instead of the next twelve in the series?
I personally can't wait until Gatchaman Episodes #39/40 (The "Jigokiller, the People-Eating Flowers" two-parter) are released. That's the story that hooked me as a kid!
