This is great news. Hopefully the DVD will have an Ebert commentary.

Jesus... I almost started doing cartwheels when I saw the thread title. When I saw the link, my heart sank. Ahwell.... I'm still hoping for something nice for this movie.

Needless to say, I'll be skipping this pail of garbage either way. For fans though, it's probably good news.
Ebert + commentary = blah.
Maybe he can spend 2 hours justifying his 3 1/2 stars for Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life.

It's been out for awhile now, though I still haven't ordered my own copy.

Eraserhead is the most expesive single DVD I own. It comes in an 8x8 box. Get it and watch it on a Friday at midnight just like the Nuart did back in the good ol' days.
to keep this thread from being hijacked, check out this thread for all Eraserhead issues...

Most I've spend to date on only one DVD would probably be the Akira that came in the metal case (I've noticed it's a plastic case now). Paid I think 30 for that...of course that was 3 years ago to, they were a bit more than.

Eraserhead was digitally remastered and scrubbed clean frame by individual frame. It took 3 years of effort to perfect the mastering quality. The disc also includes an hour and a half long interview with Lynch in which he tells every single story about the movie's production that he can remember.
If that's not worth $40 to you, then spend your money elsewhere.

I stand by my statement that 40 dollars for any dvd is excessive in my opinion. However, I will probably buy this film, one because I dig Lynch's work, and two because I dig the film itself.

Let's just say that Lynch does not play well with others.......
....so he decided to do it his own way.

Just saw on another site that Fox in Australia (R4) are releasing a double feature - the press release as follows:
VALLLEY OF THE DOLLS &
BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS
New to DVD October 8, 2003
Drugs, Fame, Massacre, Rock-Star, Sex, Suicide…
The 1970’s comedy classics Valley of the Dolls and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls are available to OWN on DVD October 8, 2003.
Valley of the Dolls is about show business and three girls who weather it’s storms, with one of them (Sharon Tate) ending up a suicide when she realizes she has cancer and will no longer be able to work in porno pictures.
Another is ambitious singer (Patty Duke) who finds success hard to take and becomes an addict of pills. The other is a prim New Englander (Barbara Parkins) who is lured into television advertising.
Despite the money, she also takes to pills, but gets hold of herself and goes home. Also on hand, Susan Hayward as a tough survivor, a star who needs no pills to continue her career. Valley of the Dolls has a feature running time of 118 minutes and is rated M.
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is Russ Meyer’s racy, colourful tale about an uninhibited all-girl rock group and is not a sequel to it predecessor, "Valley Of The Dolls," despite its title. Filled with some of the most bizarre characters and situations ever seen on film, it spans nearly every film genre – comedy, musical, horror, sex and melodrama.
When three female rock’n’rollers travel to Hollywood to claim an inheritance, they meet up with a kinky music promoter who turns them on to a whole new scene. At first, all seems very exciting and the naïve trio becomes submerged in his dangerous tinseltown underworld – before they discover his true motives. Written by film critic Roger Ebert, this racy psychedelic extravaganza was one of the most talked about film sensations of
its time. Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is rated R and has a feature running time of 104 minutes.

Certainly he needs to reach some threshold point to cover his costs but his store sells other items as well and in a Forbes interview Lynch mentioned that his website has been profitable mostly due to sales from his store (Lynch provided no profit details). Add that to the sales volume from Eraserhead DVD (a cult favorite) and I don't think we need to worry about Lynch being on poor street. On the David Lynch website, fans were commenting that order numbers from the website had moved up over 30,000 in less than three months. If titles like Suspiria can ship 50,000 units this is not out of line.
It is just not the $39 bucks either. Lynch charges just under $10 shipping and handling for domestic shipment and almost $20 to ship the Eraserhead DVD to Europe. Lynch can charge whatever he feels for the product itself ($39) but when he charges that amount to put it in a shoe box and send it out - that
makes shipping and handling a profit center.
By the way, order a Eraserhead button for $1.50 - Lynch tacks on the same $10 shipping and handling.
Lynch claimed at his web site that the DVD was last delayed (Eraserhead was suppose to ship in Fall 2001 - finally shipping in Winter 2003) due to compression problems on the DVD (attempting to get full PCM audio) and a quality video transfer on one disc.
This failed and he went to another company. He finally settled for not providing full PCM audio. Why not go to two disks and putting supplementary material on the second disc would seem to be a fair question for Mr. Lynch.
However, he had already ordered packaging which is only
set up for one disc in a very cheap looking paper sleeve - held shut with a gummy cello tape. Perhaps that is why two discs did not occur. Or at the end of the day, Lynch was unwilling to pay an
additional $1 for a second disc.
The packaging? Naturally, the packaging should be a secondary factor to disc's contents. However, if you are going to charge Criterion pricing for a two disc set and provide only one disc ... you should at least think things out better than this.
I'm a big fan of Lynch's films (in general) and I respect him as an artist.
But, to the point you raised about the value of the DVD - let's use real math.
Is the single DVD worth 49 dollars domestic or 59 dollars for our International friends?
No.
