Barbara Steele on DVD?

Does anyone have the Alpha titles-Nighmare Castle or She Beast. Are these worthy to belong in my collection? What else is on tap for one of the sixties most underrated scream queens?

Steele is a long-time passion for me...ever since i was a kid. I say get them...of course. Nightmare Castle, aka The Faceless Monster, the b&w quality is good and properly letterboxed. it is the 100min un-cut version. I dont have the Alpha of that one but the Retromedia is fine with me. I do have the Alpha The She Beast, but when I recieved it I was interupted and need to viddy it again. I dont remember being dissapointed.

I really love her in Mask of Satan and Castle of Blood(uncensored international version). funny....just got 5 photos of her framed today!

Do not, I repeat do not, buy the Alpha release of She-Beast. The film is horribly pan & scanned (it's 2.35:1 OAR).

The Retromedia DVD of The Faceless Monster is fine.

Get the Retromedia Faceless Monster, not the Madacy or Alpha Nightmare Castle. The Retromedia version is uncut, and is around 20 minutes longer than the others.

And, of course, get Mario Bava's Black Sunday. Her best, in my opninion.

Man when she opens her robe and all you see is her rib cage, Black Sunday is the real winner for this scream queen IMHO.

Don't forget about her role in David Cronenberg's Shivers. If possible, go for the inexpensive UK R2 disc, which has a better transfer (and is OAR) than the US disc (which is fullscreen).

Okay gutwrencher but there is two movies called Black Sunday, the other one is with Bruce Dern
Spoiler:
He being a burned out vet is trying to explode a good year blimp under box filled with thousands of nails, on a unsuspecing crowd at a football game.
Marte Keller also starred.

yes....I'm aware. so dont call Bava's BS.....call it La maschera del demonio(TMOS)...if that helps. that is the original title after all.

and DJ....thanks for the import info. I dislike the Image release....but picked it up cheap...too cheap. I'll be looking for the R2.

While you're at it, pick up the UK Rabid disc, as it is also better than its US counterpart from Roger Corman's studio.

And don't forget about her performance in Federico Fellini's 1963 masterpiece, (Criterion) . . .

THE SHE BEAST is a really enjoyable little movie but the DVD isn't superb quality to say the least. However, it is acceptable for a $5 budget DVD. As for NIGHTMARE CASTLE, your best best is the RetroMedia disc, under its alternate title THE FACELESS MONSTER.

The BEST Babs discs on the market, though, are the Image BLACK SUNDAY and the Synapse CASTLE OF BLOOD.

Alpha has a couple of more Steele flicks on the way: NIGHT CREATURES FROM THE GRAVE and THE GHOST, both of which are pretty good movies.
