ebay auction for all 16 OOP Criterions...

I searched the forum for the item number but didn't get any matches, so I'll go ahead and post this.

I had the crazy idea of seeing if there were any big collections of criterions on ebay so I searched for criterion and sorted with highest price first and found this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...&category=2305

An auction for all 16 OOP Criterions. I don't know much about Criterions except for a few posts I've read here. Does this look legit? If so, what would all these be worth?

This is way out of my price range (not that I'd rush to spend $1000 or more for 16 DVDs if it wasn't), but if this is for real, this could get interesting in the last few minutes...

$1K for 16 titles? Whoever's bidding is out of his/her mind. And a buy it now tag of $1.6K? Damn.

Wait, cool new member... posting about an auction... acting like he doesn't know the price... Wait, is this an ad for your own auction?

Good point.

I don't know why the seller is not selling thes DVDs individually. Why? Because what serious collector of Criterions would need all or even most of them?

The seller has a good rating - but this auction is strange.

Should be interesting.

I have all those titles. I paid $1,432.14 for mine.

I am really sick.

The person who has the high bid already bought some of these before.

Also The person selling them has also bought multiple copies of some of these titles he is selling.

Maybe he is just buying low and reselling them. It just looks strange.

The $615 sale of Salo and the 233.50 sale of The Killer he mentions is to the person who currently is bidding on this.

I just have a strange felling that some sort of shill bidding may be going on.

Of course this is why I stay away from Ebay

because it is in the wrong forum?

I know you can not post links to ebay auctions that you originate. I thought ones that were interesting or might provoke discussion were allowed.

I suppose if you have the money to burn go for it, but otherwise I'd have to say you're insane for buying them. My opinion is that Criterion will eventually rerelease these, so why pay the extravagant price?

They should all be sealed for that kind of scratch.

That and come with a pair of Super Bowl tickets or something.

Haven't most of them been re-released anyway? People that spend outrageous amounts of money for stuff like this must have a lot of money to throw around.

Untrue. gcribbs is correct. For one example, see this thread that RandyC started about a peculiar eBay seller and his auctions.

If you see a post that you think is out of place, please report it and leave it alone... we'll decide whether it needs moderation or not. Thanks!

I wouldn't give 2 cents for Salo so I think I will pass on this one.

Heck, I'd give up to $100 or so for it if I could find it somewhere, in order to sell off on eBay to those freaks who pay insane ammounts for it.

I wouldn't even pay $50 for all 16 (well maybe I'd would then sell them all on ebay for insane amounts)

I have all these titles and had thought maybe if cash was short (ie. layed off or something) I might consider lumping them togeather like this and sell them on ebay. No I have never sold anything on ebay before and this is not mine.

I wonder what his reserve is?

I just love when others "police" the postings, they are like Mall Security Guards.

I guess I don't understand the collector's mentality. I would never buy a DVD just to have it sit, unplayed, in some locked glass display case. According to the seller's description of these items, it doesn't appear that they are even sealed (which must decrease their value to a collector). The 400 Blows and Beauty and the Beast have been re-released in superior versions, so I think the only reason to purchase the originals is as collectibles.

I wonder what will happen to the prices of the three Tati films when they get re-released (in restored & remastered editions) in R1 by Criterion or some other company (as planned by the bfi in the UK, and Wild Side in France--starting in September)?

As much as I enjoy my 80+ Criterion DVDs, I have puchased them selectively, and have no desire to "complete my collection". It seems sheer madness to pay $1000+ for this lot, but I guess as long as there are fools who'll pay the price, it's a safe investment.

The same seller had the same lot for sale last week, and it didn't reach the reserve. He lowered the buy it now price by $100 and relisted it. Can't remember the high bid on the last auction, but I think it was $1400.

I just read that whole thread. I can't believe I missed that one. It was hilarious. I haven't laughed that hard in awhile.

Even then dubious. My question would be .... let's see you have the copy that's not as good - but there were only so many copies made of this thing that's not as good ... and I would want to collect that because why?

These have really risen in the last 12 months. Some people are going to take a beating if the restored films look better than the Criterion transfer. These were not extra laden DVDs to begin with. Interesting films - all three of them.

Wow. Thanks Static Cling for posting that link - I can only imagine how gloomy my life would have been had I never read that. I haven't laughed that hard for a long time. And I just live 2 hours north of Omaha -- Scary!

Anyway, I have no connection to this seller. I've been thinking of splurging a little on some criterions that I want to see (Hidden Fortress, Passion of Joan Of Arc, Grand Illusion) and ones I've seen and I think are worth owning (Rushmore, Brazil, L'Avventura) and the best place I have found is deepdiscountdvd.com, which still isn't that great for someone used to $7 DVDs through columbia house. So I thought it would be worth checking ebay for a nice little collection of criterions and that was what I found. I thought it was interesting and I thought DVDtalkers might like to see it since no one had posted about it before.

I thought FilmFanSea made some good points about how insane the whole OOP Criterion thing is. What is the superior version The 400 Blows? I looked it up and there's a disc from Fox Lorber and also a version of The 400 Blows in a Truffaut box set from Criterion. Also, are any other of the newer, still in print DVDs of any of these movies (or at least cheaper, in the case of the cheaper OOP versions of Hard Boiled & The Killer) superior to these (besides the two that you mentioned)?

If someone wants a title bad enough & is willing to pay what it takes, then more power to him. I've paid some high prices for LDs that I really wanted on eBay. We all have our upper limits. It remains to be seen if there is someone who wants those DVDs badly enough & has a real high upper limit.
