Which version of American Pie to buy?

There are more versions of these films than I can shake a stick at. Which is the definitive version to own? I'm not interested in previews for AP3. Thanks!

I think all the versions have essentially been the same (well, except for the slight differnces between rated and unrated). I haven't heard what exactly this new "Beneath The Crust" thing is, but basically it's just another disc of supplemental material included with the previously released disc, IIRC. I would probably go with that new version, espeecially since it has a free movie ticket with it and will probably be on sale somewhere. The "Ultimate Edition" had both FS and WS versions, but you should know what we here think of FS versions . Also it had a DTS track, but from what I understood, it was identical sounding to the DD version.
Bottom Line: Whatever's cheapest would be fine. If they're all the same price, I'd go with the new one.

I'd probably just go with the new one unless you hear of a problem with it after the release date. I have no interest in the new one. I have the first Unrated Collector's Edition and I have no interest in these new versions.

But that doesn't mention the upcoming new release at all.

Probably because the upcoming re-release is the same as the “collector’s edition” version. (not sure, but from what I’ve read I think so). I guess you could wait for that new version to come out and the site will update the comparison (if needed).

The picture and sound quality may be identical, but my understanding is that the new release includes an entire additional disc of new supplements...

2 discs because it has both wide and full versions (and/or has American Pie 1 and 2)

I really wish a new transfer of the first movie would be done....way too dark. That would be the only reason for re-purchasing it.

Wrong. AP : Ultimimate Edition had two discs for the FS and WS versions. On the new release there is a new disc of supplemental material called "Beneath The Crust - Part 1". Nobody seems to know what's on it-- it may just be promo stuff for AP3. In any case, how much supplemental making-of material could you need? We're not talking about Black Hawk Down or LOTR here.

i have the unrated CE too. I guess which version you get will depend on what u think about extras. Personally, I really liked the behind the scenes stuff on the U/CE dvds I have... so more extras might be the way to go. If you are the type that ONLY watches the movie... then lurk around the dvdtalk exchange forum, there is always that one guy who HAS to have the "bestest" version of a dvd and will unload the old one cheap...

I think that’s one documentary. But with respect to American Pie 1 it’s basically the CE and not the UE

I just saw a commercial for this "Beneath The Crust" DVD. From what it looks like, I think it's a bunch of interviews with the cast about the making of certain scenes and probably some stories as well. It sounds good. It'd get it if I could buy it seperatley. But if your looking for the version to get, get the Unr8d Collectors Edition with this bonus disc.

This disc also comes with AP2, but it's titled: Beneath The Crust volume 2. Basically the same thing, the cast interviews about scenes from AP2.

I have the Ultimate edition myself. Nothing special. THe packaging allready fell apart on me; the front flap broke off. Go with the Collectors Edition because AP2 is an amma-ray and they'd look better together like that.

I may grab this and ditch my UE of AP1... I agree with the sentiment of the DTS track being lackluster, but since when did a comedy that's mostly sight and dialogue based, rather than effects, need DTS?

According to the writer of the American Pie films, all the features of the Beneath the Crust DVDs and more will make their way to the American Wedding DVD in the beginning of 2004. He said Universal is allowing them to have more freedom for what will be placed on the DVD. Last I heard, they were recording a new documentary about the films and how the writer's life in high school spawned them. It'll include interviews with the actual people based off each characters, similar to the documentary on the Cheats DVD.

So does that mean that Beneath the Crust vol 1 and 2 will be included for American Wedding in a new disc that will include both vol 1 and 2 and more features. Damn this is even too low for Universal. Just when you thought they could not go any lower they just hit rock bottom. Then again they have hit rock bottom for a while and with more blunders like this they will stay there.

Why not just wait a few years and get the quadrilogy set after American Divorce?

I thought the deleted scenes were on the Collectors Edition too! Oh well. Yes it does have deleted scenes, but they're not very good.

But after all this news, if I were you, I'd hold it out and go with the trilogy box set. It'd be the best way.

Oh, and that doc for the AP3 DVD sounds pretty sweet. I can't wait for American Wedding, the previews are looking pretty promising.

lol, they are already pushing it with American Wedding... unless the priciples just bomb at everything else they do and are forced back to AP to try and save their young careers, i dont see a 4th flick in our future. I really like the AP films tho... really fun movies to watch.

No, the CE has no deleted scenes. You can also check the comparison site for what has what.
