I don't know whether the episodes are extended or not, but it is very likely that since you "grew up watching re-runs", the re-runs were edited to fit more commercials in. In other words, the episodes, when first aired, contained scenes cut out of the re-runs (to get those extra couple of commercials in).

The reruns are edited to squeeze in extra commercials. The versions on the dvd's are the original full length versions.

Example: The first season episode where Hawkeye and Trapper give Henry's desk to the black market. At one point when smuggling the desk, they both assume a position as if they are praying at it like an altar. Two days after watching it on DVD, I saw it in syndication and that scene was cut.

Similarly, and this may be my fading memory too, the first episode in Season Four is an hour long (or whatever it works out to with commercial times). But I recall seeing this as a rerun, being only 30 minutes. Am I crazy or did they actually cut 30 minutes in order to fit this into a timeslot??

OK, I'm probably crazy regardless, but still...
