Since when is "Independence Day" OOP? Is this the 5-Star Collection version? If it is, i've seen at at Best Buy all the time. I suppose it's another version. Can someone provide a link for me?

You are correct. Yesterday in a HTF chat, Van Ling said if he could revisit The Abyss on DVD, he'd like to do an anamorphic transfer. I suppose there won't be an anamorphic version until the next video format.

This may be the shortest "moratorium" of all time...

Peter Staddon, a 20th Century Fox Rep, said on an HTF chat last year that the 2-disc sets would eventually be re-released... I thought it would be another year or so before that happened... good news indeed!

slop101 07-09-03 05:22 PM

You know, looking at the list of
features for the Fight Club set,
it doesn't really look so feature-
packed as it once did - escpecially
compared to so many of the
2 and 3 disc sets coming out
these days.

Yes, it is the Five Star Collection Version, but most likely they will change the packaging a little and remove the Five Star name, since they decided to discontinue it awhile ago. The specs and extras should be the same though.

RocShemp 07-09-03 09:10 PM

The copies I saw at Costco of Independance Day and Die Hard both had Five Star Collection packaging as once before. The difference is this big outer packaging (all of these Fox re-releases at Costco have this) that has artwork for Daredevil on it and mention ofthe coupon.

mikewendt 07-09-03 10:02 PM

It's a 2-disc SE, that much is obvious... They probably just changed the packaging.

Most of these OOP 5-star collection versions can still be found easily on store shelves. Just because something's OOP doesn't mean it ceases to exist.

Are you talking about Moulin Rouge?? It seems like they just took it OOP just a few months ago.

Doesn't taking a DVD set OOP and making just 1-disc versions and then bringing the OOP one back so soon cost the studio more money than just keeping the originals in print? I understand that making something "unavailable" increases the chances of sales they may not have otherwise, but this "moratorium" seems a little short for that. I'm used to the Disney model that say moratorium = 5-10 years.

Is this just stupid or do I need another lesson in marketing?

PJsig08 07-10-03 07:58 PM

Sucks for all the people who stocked up on these thinking their OOPs...

This is the stupidest post. Ever. There are only two DVD editions of Fight Club. The release in question is the OOP version. You will buy a DVD again (like it or not, we all do), and you'll quickly learn bootlegging movies is stupid and criminal.

Actually you are the stupidest member here. Your post is absolutely worthless.

Do you even know how to read. John NEVER said there were more than 2 versions of Fight club. He is making a general statement about studios and how they release multiple versions of a single movie.

Also you state "The release in question is the OOP version" bolding the IS as if you are correcting John. But if you have read his post you would have realized that he already knows that.

So keep your ignorant remarks to yourself

If piracy is a product of it then so be it.

I also agree.
I have not bought a CD for over 5 years.
Simply because I refuse to pay 15.99 for 9 songs. Now that is unethical and is the real robbery.

I would sooner rob and pilage before i let some old guy in a suit rape me of my hard earned money.

If the DVD industry want to play games, Then they can kiss my money goodbye. In reality new movies are availible for free way earlier than on DVD.

darkflounder 07-10-03 11:39 PM

Memo to self: Put sealed copy of Fight Club: SE on eBay before the sheeple get this news.

Paying 15 grand for a new car is also screwing me over. If the car industry wants to play games, i'll just steal one.

rotfl Well said.

I don't know why people always have a heart attack about these things, like the studios were murdering your children. Things go in and out of print, at the whim of the people who produce them. If you want something buy it, and if you don't, don't worry about it. If you were a fan of Fight Club, you would have bought it a long time ago. If you just recently saw it for the first time, you could have read that it would be rereleased at some point and decided to wait, you could have bought the 1 disc, or you could have done both. People often have the attitude that the studio's actions somehow effect our ability to make choices as consumers.

Stealing songs from a band/singer who spend months writing, performing, and producing an hours worth of music is wrong. You guys act like they just go up to a microphone and sign for an hour, it ain't easy. You act like you are only gonna listen to the CD once and then throw it away. For all the effort that these people are putting into their CD's and the millions of people that steal from them, I would gladly pay 15 dollars for a CD.

Would you pay $15 for a VHS of a movie, cause that's what a cd is. It's old technology for premium prices.

PJsig08 07-11-03 07:28 PM

My Costco removed ALL their Fight Club and Fox "OOP" titles...nothin' there anymore. So get em while you can...

MasterCXtreme 07-11-03 07:40 PM

Thanks for everyone who answered my Independence Day question.

Now about the P2P piracy...
I download songs all the time. Normally just to hear a new band i've heard of, or just out of pure boredom. I rarely ever download a whole CD and burn it on a blank CD-R. 95% of the time when I download songs, I put them on to a mixed cd that you wouldn't be able to get in stores. I still buy cd's, but less often then I used to ever since Napster and the P2P wave came around. If one of my favorite groups has a new CD out, I'll buy it to support them, and just so I don't have to go through the pain of burning a cd. I've only burned a few full CD's. I prefer buying cd's over burning. Would you burn a DVD instead of buying one and miss out on all the extras, menus, and video quality? I know I wouldn't.
