For the first quarter of 2003, my vote would have gone to Criterion's Straw Dogs. An absolutely amazing movie, with a terrific selection of special features and all-around excellent tansfer. A special mention must be given to Kino's (truthfully, Eureka's) Metropolis, which stands as one of this years home video milestones, and will pobably remain the single standing standard for silent film transfers. Criterion's Beauty and the Beast remaster is nice, too, and I am all smiles about Fox's "special order" disc of Sunrise.
For the second quarter, I'd have to give it to the Brakhage anthology. That is the single most thoughtfully produced DVD package of the year, will probably remain so, and stands as a testament to Criterion's sincere devotion to the presentation of pictures that move, as opposed to the manipulative flamboyance of the format they are on (thank God, no weblinks!). But I have to hand it to Warner, for their work on Giant...they did a fantastic job. Since Criterion can't get too many of the classic movies owned by big-name companies, I'm glad that Warner owns so many greats, and I'm VERY pleased they gave this lesser-considered movie such treatment.
To summarize.
