I think the point is that some people think that nothing that certain directors or actors do "sucks a$$". Some of it may be less liked, some of it more so, but all of it is worth watching on some level.

More than a few films in my collection have been blind buys because of the director or actors involved. Don't tell me you don't consider this a factor in blind buys, provided that you do blind buys of course.

Just so I don't come off as a jerk, we have 20+ titles in common. Were it my collection, I'd dump the horror movies. Just not my thing although, oddly enough, I have a huge collection of horror books.

If you interested, you can find my collection at DVD Aficionado or DVD Profiler. My collection is perfect with three execptions (perfect for me of course). 1) There's some kid movies that I never would have bought if I didn't have kids. 2) My wife has picked out a few that I probably wouldn't have (she likes the big blockbusters). 3) I don't have the money to fill in some of the missing gaps at this time. But when I do I'm planning on getting some of the Fox Classics to get the free Sunrise.

Chasing Amy, yes - because it's brilliant. Armageddon, no - because the aforementioned 'No Michael Bay' rule overrides it.

"Not enough Kubrick. Shining is a good start. Look into: 2001, Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, Dr. Strangelove."

Ugh. I think someone's collection is better off without Kubrick. The Shining is alright, but the rest are just terrible.

You are presuming that I don't like those movies? First of all, why do you think a person likes a certain director or actor? It's because they like that person's movies. To answer your question, no, I don't own a movie just because of who directed it or who is in it; I own it because I like the movie. None of the movies I recommended to the OP "suck ass". In fact, I own all of them. I recommended De Niro, Kubrick and Scorsese because of all the directors or actors in my collection, they are the ones whos movies I most consistantly enjoy. Get it?

I wholeheartedly agree with you. This is the area where I could see Imp66's arguement applied. I would never buy a movie just to complete a collection.

I wasn't trying to imply that I have a great collection, and I really don't care, I enjoy most of the movies I get.

Alot of my friends say that I have the weirdest array of films, and I guess I could agree with them cause its funny when you've got like Breakin' 2 in the same collection as Cannibal Holocaust, and Ernest goes to camp next to Evil Dead.

Okay, I did presume a little. There are people on this site that do follow that rule, though. And I think you're really emphasizing my main point. A good number of the movies you recommended, own and like, I can't stand. So, how can we possibly rate his collection?

Well, that's a different matter entirely. I personally wouldn’t need someone to rate my collection, but I decided to humor kds405 by giving him my opinion. There's no way to accurately discern a "good" collection from a "bad" collection. It's all a matter of taste.

If you personally think that your collection is good and you enjoy the movies, then who are we to tell you otherwise. Personally I do have a lot of mainstream movies (anyone who says they don't is blatently lying) and only own 1 Criterion (Hard Boiled), but I do have a lot of HK and Japanese movies - because they work for me. All your collection reflects is your personal taste and I'm not going to argue about that.

No C. Kane, no collection!

Too many American titles, are you afraid of subtitles?

It it works for you.....

Why did I respond to this thread?

Without Monty Python or Buffy the Vampire Slayer I would have to say you are not finished yet.

Says you. While I admit the ending to 2001 is hard to fathom, it is a seminal science fiction classic. Dr. Strangelove is a wonderful Cold-War era black comedy. Two other works of his that are classics that belong in most collections are Spartacus (Criterion Collection version, of course) and Paths of Glory.

Oh, and I rate your collection 3 stars out of 10. I haven't looked it over, but I figure that if you've got to ask, it must need a lot of improvement.

since there is less than 20 titles I would actually buy myself, compared to my tastes I would say your collection is crap, but if you like them great, that's what is important

Steven, it would help if we didn't need authentication.

Boy, some of these directors
