DVD Talk Legend
To be fair, the Evil Dead BotD was really noxious, and for some people, oders like that are a big problem. It's not quite the same as "The copyright notice on the insert on Speed 2 is on the right, while on the first one it's on the left" threads.

It's funny..I could see the segment commonly reffered to as Joe/Jane Six Pack making the same points about widescreen. "Why do folks get so worked up about not seeing some extra on the far left side of the screen? It's the movie that matters, and I can see what's going on even better if it fills my entire screen." Or something ridiculous like that.
I see the thread starter's point, but I think it's the nature of a dedicated forum. Fellow collectors can get empathy from other collectors about things that really DON'T matter, but annoy ya just the same.
I just skip 'em...

right, its the nature of the beast.
what i feel is uncalled for is the threads created solely for the purpose of making others feel stupid, namely the "most annoying threads" thread. absolutely no point to it other than to make others feel shame. if they thread or topic is annoying to you then ignore it instead of the obligatory tossing of the two cents that does nothing but prolong the life of said thread. if people just ignored things they find "trivial" then things would be a little more smooth around here.

Amen to the "Official Inserts" thread. Great idea.
The film is the main priority for me too but there's no question I've found myself annoyed by the little things like hubs, some that I swear were designed by child proof safety cap experts.
The attention to these details might seem extreme but I guess its just because we care so much about the product and the experience of viewing our DVDs.
I've learned so much from the posts on these forums. This is the kind of stuff I dreamed about over 10 years ago while phoning up stores looking for widescreen versions of VHS only to be told they were $89.99. Laserdisc was something to marvel at. I only knew one person whose dad actually owned one.
It's this kind of obsessive attention that alerts the casual viewer to flaws in the product and hopefully improves the quality of future releases.
And for the record, my BOTD smelled kinda sweet.

I think the posts about petty issues are the result of human nature, specifically our tendency to focus on the negative. If the DVD is fine, we look at the packaging to find something to complain about. I personally could care less about the package though, provided the DVD isn't barebones, low quality, or otherwise screwed up. But I can certainly see why some people would care.
Or, perhaps, I have no idea what I'm talking about

One doesn't include an insert.
One doesn't let you change audio tracks on the fly.
One is framed at 1.78:1 instead of the proper 1.85:1.
One has the title changed to DVD Talk Legend and the DVD Trivial Aspects on DVD Talk Forum.
One is missing the spine number.
One doesn't include the trailer.
One does have the trailer, but it's full screen.
One has the film spread across two discs.
One comes in a limited edition metal case that makes it hard to remove the keepcase without damaging it.
One has the security stickers positioned in such a way that makes it impossible to remove them without damaging the cover.
